  3. NetWare Management Map Graphs Full Set of NetWare Resources

  5. SAN JOSE, Calif. --  February 5, 1992 -- Novell, Inc., today
  6. announced NetWare Services Manager v1.0 for both Microsoft Windows
  7. and OS/2, network management applications that provide centralized
  8. monitoring and control of the NetWare environment by leveraging and
  9. extending NetWare's built-in diagnostic capabilities.  NSM includes
  10. NetWare Management Maps for both environments which display icons
  11. representing all devices on NetWare networks.

  13. NetWare Services Manager (NSM) applications run on MS-Windows or
  14. OS/2-Presentation Manager workstations and are launched via
  15. Novell's NetWare Management Map.  These products deliver cohesive
  16. NetWare management, providing systems administrators with a
  17. comprehensive overview of their NetWare environment.

  20. for managing the complete set of NetWare services -- those products
  21. that we deliver to customers," said John Edwards, vice president of
  22. marketing for Novell's NetWare Products Division.  "We've focused
  23. on making our management system intuitive and easy-to-use, while
  24. giving it the power required to manage a global NetWare
  25. environment."

  34. & Harrison's network spans five branch offices and includes
  35. approximately 1200 nodes, primarily PC/AT-class workstations,
  36. interacting with NetWare running on NetFRAME servers.

  38. NetWare Management Map Key Features and Benefits Novell's NetWare
  39. Management Map (NMM) automates resource management, reduces network
  40. downtime and optimizes network performance.  It automatically
  41. discovers NetWare devices, maps them and continuously monitors them
  42. in realtime.  NMM stores and continually updates all network
  43. information in a central record manager, using Novell's Btrieve
  44. database engine.

  48. o    Auto-discovery -- NMM eliminates manual inventory by
  49.      automatically discovering and logically mapping all devices on
  50.      a NetWare network, quickly and completely.  As an example, NSM
  51.      recently discovered and mapped Brobeck, Phleger & Harrison's
  52.      1200-node network in about one-half hour, a task that could
  53.      have taken days without auto-discovery.

  55. o    Global network view -- Combined with NMM's automated mapping
  56.      capability, users can easily manage and maintain NetWare
  57.      devices, regardless of their location.  This allows network
  58.      managers located at an organization's headquarters to control
  59.      and monitor remote resources, leveraging centralized expertise
  60.      while saving time and travel expenses.

  62. o    Graphical user interface -- In either Windows or Presentation
  63.      Manager environments, NMM provides a standardized, easy-to-use
  64.      navigational system that remains consistent for all devices on
  65.      the network.  Management applications, including NSM, are
  66.      launched via NMM by simply selecting and double-clicking on
  67.      the appropriate icon on the map.

  69. o    On-line help -- provides an overview of procedures and
  70.      policies for managing the network, as well as providing
  71.      information on specific network events and suggested problem
  72.      resolution.

  74. o    Continuous network monitoring -- NMM and associated
  75.      applications can run in the background, freeing up the
  76.      computer for other tasks while the applications compile
  77.      network statistics and log network events and errors.

  81. The NetWare Services Manager applications allow comprehensive
  82. NetWare control and monitoring of NetWare servers and workstations.

  84. Key features include:

  86. o    Server and workstation schematics -- provides an overview of
  87.      the services and hardware resident on the server and its
  88.      configuration. For example, double-clicking on a NetWare
  89.      server icon opens a window which displays graphical views of
  90.      available RAM, disk utilization, and what types of network
  91.      interface cards are installed in the server.

  93. o    User-defined alert thresholds -- users can set their own
  94.      thresholds for a variety of parameters relating to server
  95.      performance and configuration, such as the number of open
  96.      files on the server and client/server transactions. When these
  97.      thresholds are exceeded, alarms are automatically generated
  98.      and appear on the map.

  100. o    Printer and printer queue configuration and status -- NSM
  101.      automatically locates NetWare printers and their print queues
  102.      and displays associated information, such as active jobs in
  103.      the print queue.

  105. o    NLM monitor -- automatically displays a list of NLMs actively
  106.      running on the server and associated memory utilization,
  107.      names, versions numbers, and copyright information.
  108.  
  109. o    Automatic server fault and alert notification -- the entire
  110.      NetWare environment can be monitored at once.  Network
  111.      managers can quickly isolate network problems, whatever the
  112.      source, and quickly and efficiently respond to preempt further
  113.      network disruption.

  115. Pricing and Availability
  116.  
  117. NetWare Services Manager for either OS/2 or Windows will be
  118. available through Novell's distribution channels in April 1992 for
  119. the suggested list price of US$4995.  The NetWare Management Map is
  120. included with NSM at no extra charge.  The NetWare Management Map
  121. for OS/2 is also included with NetWare Services for OS/2, which was
  122. introduced in December 1991.

  124. One NetWare Management Agent, software that resides in the NetWare
  125. server and reports network statistics and events to the network
  126. management applications, is included with each NSM product. NetWare
  127. Management Agents (one is needed per NetWare 3.x server) will also
  128. be available in April (please see the accompanying news release).
