  1.                           NETCHAT V.1.0 Rev. A

  3.  NetChat is an independently developed program which allows peer-to-peer 
  4.  communication on a Novell local area network.  By enabling users to "talk"
  5.  to one another directly through their workstations, NetChat speeds routine  
  6.  office communication, without placing any additional demand on the fileserver.
  7.  
  8.  The program presented here is the revised Limited version of NetChat, 
  9.  which does not offer many of the features which you can obtain in the Full
  10.  version of NetChat. With this upgraded version of the program your network's
  11.  users will have access to an "Answering Machine" module, multi-user "Forum"
  12.  chats, and an E-Mail system.
  13.  
  14.  NetChat is a shareware program. It is freely distributed on the understanding
  15.  that those who use it for over 30 days will register with, and submit a small
  16.  license fee to, its developers.  To obtain a registration form, please print 
  17.  out REGISTER.FRM.

  20.  INSTALLATION:
  21.  
  22.  1. Log in to your network as the network supervisor
  23.  2. Make a CHAT directory on the root of the SYS volume of your fileserver. 
  24.     It is essential that CHAT be installed on SYS to ensure correct execution 
  25.     of the program.
  26.  3. Copy your unzipped NetChat files onto the CHAT directory.
  27.  4. Check that you have the following files:
  28.        CHAT.EXE
  29.        REGISTER.FRM
  30.        NETCHAT.ICO
  31.        READ.ME
  32.  
  33.  5. Put the CHAT directory into the path of each of the workstations, and grant
  34.     at least the read, write and create rights to all users for this directory.
  35.  
  36.  To run the program, type CHAT at the DOS prompt.

  39.  SETUP:
  40.  
  41.  Each user may change certain characteristics of NetChat by choosing Setup
  42.  from the main menu:
  43.  
  44.    Available for Chat:
  45.    If the user does not wish receive calls for a period of time, he or she can
  46.    toggle this option to NO.  Setting it back to YES makes the user available 
  47.    once more for calls.
  48.  
  49.    Timeout After:
  50.    The user may define the length of time for which NetChat will wait for
  51.    an answer to a call.  The time interval is stated in seconds, with a 
  52.    default value of 30.
  53.  
  54.    Chat Request Line:
  55.    The user may personalize the message sent to those he or she calls by 
  56.    typing text into the highlighted area.

  58.  Press Escape to leave Setup. You can now save or abandon your changes.

  62.  PLACING A CALL:
  63.  
  64.  - Run CHAT
  65.  - Choose "Page" from the main menu.  
  66.  - You will be presented with a second menu (the Page menu) listing all users
  67.    currently logged into the network.
  68.  - Use the up and down arrows to highlight the user you wish to contact.
  69.  - Hit enter.

  71.  NetChat will now page the user you have selected - for this example the user's
  72.  name will be Jim.
  73.  
  74.  Upon selecting JIM from the Page menu, you will receive one of the following 
  75.  messages:  
  76.  
  77.  JIM is unavailable      This indicates that Jim is either engaged in a NetChat
  78.                          call already, or that he has elected not to receive
  79.                          calls at the moment.
  80.  
  81.  Prompt Blocked Retry?   Jim's monitor is currently displaying a network 
  82.                          message, so the message that you were paging him
  83.                          could not reach him. If you wish to try calling again,
  84.                          in the hope that Jim has cleared the message which
  85.                          blocked yours, select "Yes". If not, select "No" and
  86.                          you will be returned to the list of those currently
  87.                          logged into the fileserver.

  89.  Paging JIM ...          Your call has been placed. Jim's workstation will
  90.                          inform him that he is being paged. Your workstation 
  91.                          will wait for Jim to respond for the length of time
  92.                          you have specified in Setup.  You may hit a key at any
  93.                          time to stop paging and return to the Page menu.

  96.  RECEIVING A CALL:
  97.  
  98.  If another user is paging you a message will appear at the bottom of your 
  99.  screen informing you that you are being paged, and by whom.
  100.  
  101.  If you receive this message while in NetChat:
  102.   - Hold down the Control key while pressing Enter to clear the message.
  103.   - You will be connected automatically with the caller
  104.  
  105.  Otherwise:
  106.   - Hold down the Control key while pressing Enter to clear the message.
  107.   - Go to DOS
  108.   - At the DOS prompt, type CHAT
  109.   - You will now be connected with the incoming call.
  110.  
  111.  To chat, simply type in what you wish the other party to receive.  Both
  112.  parties can type simultaneously.

  114.  When you wish to hang up, press Escape. This will cut the connection between 
  115.  the terminals, and return both parties to NetChat's main menu.

  121.  ADDITIONAL NOTES:

  123.    NETCHAT & MICROSOFT WINDOWS(tm):
  124.  
  125.    NetChat works great under Windows!  Set NetChat up as you would any other
  126.    DOS application under Windows, and change the icon to NETCHAT.ICO, which 
  127.    is included in this package.  You will now be able to initiate or respond
  128.    to CHAT requests with the click of a mouse button.

  130.    USING NETCHAT FROM REMOTE:
  131.  
  132.    NetChat can be accessed through remote communication packages such as
  133.    Telereplica(tm) and Co/Session(tm).  Just dial into the network, log in
  134.    and type CHAT, as you normally would from a local workstation.

  149.  REVISION NOTES:
  150.  
  151.  The first release of NetChat was designed for 50-user (or less) networks.
  152.  As a response to demand, revision A now works correctly on networks of up
  153.  to 250 users.
  154.  
  155.  Some users of the earlier version experienced difficulties in selecting
  156.  a user to page from the page menu.  This was corrected in revision A,
  157.  as were a few other minor bugs.

  159.  If you already use NetChat, are not yet registered, and have a version of
  160.  NetChat older than revision A, please replace the older version with this
  161.  one.
