- Mpack and munpack are utilities for encoding and decoding
- (respectively) binary files in MIME (Multipurpose Internet Mail
- Extensions) format mail messages. For compabibility with older forms
- of transferring binary files, the munpack program can also decode
- messages in split-uuencoded format. The mac port can also decode
- messages in split-binhex format.
-
- In short, mpack is the MIME equivalent of uudecode/binhex.
-
- Versions are included for unix, pc, os2, mac, amiga, and archimedes
- systems.
-
- This MIME implementation is intended to be as simple and portable as
- possible. For a slightly more sophisticated MIME implementation, see
- the program MetaMail, available via anonymous FTP to
- thumper.bellcore.com, in directory pub/nsb

- PGP signatures:
-
- Starting with version 1.5, all official mpack distributions are PGP
- signed by "John Gardiner Myers <jgm+@cmu.edu>". The PGP signatures
- are detached from the distributions themselves, in files with the
- ".asc" filename extension. If you do not have PGP, you can ignore the
- signature files. For more information, see the appropriate README
- file in the mpack distribution.

- Platform specific notes:
-
- ------------------------------
- Unix:
-
- Binary distributions are provided for Linux and NetBSD only. Users of
- other systems need to grab the "src" distribution and compile
- mpack/munpack themselves.
-
- To unpack the "src" distribution:
-
- uncompress mpack-1.5-src.tar.Z
- tar xf mpack-1.5-src.tar
-
- Then read the "Compilation" section in the file README.unix
-
- ------------------------------
- PC DOS and OS/2:
-
- The distributions are provided in ZIP format. If you do not have an
- unzip utility, or your unzip utility is too old to recognize this ZIP
- format, there is an up-to-date unzip utility in the file
- unzipdos.txt. The file unzipdos.txt should be transferred in *Text*
- mode, read the file for instructions.
-
- ------------------------------
- Mac:
-
- The distribution is provided in BinHex format. There is a single
- "mpack" application, it does both packing and unpacking. The
- documentation is in the mpack application's online help.
-
- ------------------------------
- Amiga:
-
- The distribution is provided in Lharc format.
-
- ------------------------------
- Archimedes:
-
- The distribution is provided in Sparkive format.
