  9. I)  WHAT IS PCROUTE AND PCBRIDGE?
  10.  
  11. PCroute and PCbridge are software programs for IBM PC computers
  12. that can convert a PC with the necessary network cards into a IP
  13. router (PCroute) or an ethernet bridge (PCbridge).

  15. More information on exactly what capabilities PCroute and PCbridge
  16. have can be found in the 'readme.pcroute.doc' and
  17. 'readme.pcbridge.doc'.

  21. II) WHAT IS THE HISTORY OF PCROUTE and PCBRIDGE?
  22.  
  23. The first version of PCroute was designed, coded, tested, and
  24. deployed by Vance Morrison in 1988 while he was working for
  25. Northwestern University. The code proved very useful and reliable,
  26. and encouraged by this success, Vance Morrison continued further
  27. development and deployment of the code at Northwestern.
  28.  
  29. It quickly became obvious that PCroute and PCbridge could be useful 
  30. to many others outside of Northwestern. The decision was to make
  31. the code as well as the source freely available.  To keep some
  32. control, however, the copywrite did not allow distribution of
  33. modified versions of PCroute.  This restriction turned out to be an
  34. excellent compromise between the users need to have and modify the
  35. source, and the author's desire to maintain the control that was
  36. needed to enhance PCroute and PCbridge as a unified product.

  38. In 1990 the author, Vance Morrison, left NorthWestern and it became
  39. clear that continuing product delevopment could best be assured if
  40. some commercial entity would support it and continue it's enhancement.

  42. By earily 1991, LANport Inc. purchased the copywrite for PCRoute.
  43. They have committed to continuing the development of PCroute and
  44. PCbridge as well as providing ongoing support.
  45.  
  46. Futhermore LANport's goal is NOT to restrict use of PCroute and
  47. PCbridge, but rather to make it even more widely used by providing
  48. enhancements and support that are requirements for many users. 
  49.  
  50. Vance Morrison, the author of both PCRoute and PCBridge, has been 
  51. retained as the technical product manager in this effort.

  54. II) WHERE TO FIND PCROUTE and PCBRIGE?
  55.  
  56. There are now two different versions of PCroute and PCbridge,
  57. the one that has been distributed to date, and the enhanced
  58. version, both of which LANport is developing and supporting.
  59.  
  60.     THE 'FTP' VERSION:
  61.  
  62. The freely distributed version will continue to be available,
  63. without  charge to Universities and nonprofit insitutions. Certain
  64. updates and enhancements will also be provided in future releases. 
  65. The 'official' repository for the binaries and documentation will
  66. continue to be the FTP archive on ftp.acns.nwu.edu (129.105.113.52) in
  67. pub/pcroute.   (The 'official' repository may change in the
  68. future).  The file 'readme.dir' contains additional information
  69. about the distribution directory.

  94.      THE ENHANCED VERSION:

  96. LANport is developing the next generation of PCroute and PCbridge
  97. that it will sell and support commercially.
  98. Improvements include enhanced network management, higher speed
  99. serial line support, improved user interface and documentation.
