  9. Congratulations!  You now can edit your web pages, right in the
  10. most common web browsers. JustEdit uses no server or client side
  11. application and gives you the ability to quickly edit web pages on
  12. the web using only Microsoft Internet Explorer (tm) or Netscape
  13. Navigator (tm), v 4.0 or later.

  15. JustEdit is the quick and painless way to edit your web pages
  16. anytime, anywhere, as often as you like.  Imagine being able to
  17. correct a typo, update a headline, price, or date, and even correct
  18. a broken or changed link, on the fly, right in a browser!  Using
  19. JustEdit, there's no need to start an FTP application, find a
  20. source file, or download the file from the web, start a web page
  21. editor, make the changes, save the changes, then re-upload the
  22. file.  Now you can change the contents of any web page immediately,
  23. right in a web browser.  Never again will you be wasting time by
  24. "round-tripping" web files back and forth to your web server, or
  25. needlessly searching for html files on your local hard disk! Or
  26. making a frantic call back to the office, trying to talk someone

  40. the promotional version on as many web sites as you like.  Altering
  41. or modifying the operation of JustEdit, in any way, voids this

  64. JustEdit requires a web browser such as Microsoft Internet Explorer
  65. (tm), Netscape Navigator (tm), Netscape Communicator (tm) (version
  66. 4.0 or later), or the AOL (tm) browser (version 4.0 or later), and
  67. a way to initially upload (FTP) the JustEdit files to your web
  68. server or Internet Service Provider (ISP).

  73. INSTALLATION
  74. ========================

  76.      1.) Unzip all files into any directory (Macintosh users should
  77. uncompress the .sit file).  This process will result in a single
  78. directory named "justedit", containing two files, "justedit.jar",
  79. and "index.html".
  80.  
  81.      2.) Open the file named "justedit.html" found within the
  82. "justedit" directory with any text editor (Notepad for Windows, or
  83. SimpleText for Macintosh will do the job here).
  84.  
  85.      3.) Find the line in the file that currently reads: <param
  86. name="Host" value="ftp.yourdomain.com">, and change the Host value
  87. from "ftp.yourdomain.com" to your FTP host name.  This should be
  88. the same host name you use to FTP files to your web server.  For
  89. example, if your web site is www.cnn.com, this line should read:
  90. <param name="Host" value="ftp.cnn.com">.  When you're finished,
  91. close the file and save the change.

  93.      4.) Upload the directory (or folder) named "justedit" to your 
  94. web server or Internet Service Provider (ISP) using any File 
  95. Transfer Protocol (FTP) application.

  100. INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE
  101. ========================

  103. Using JustEdit couldn't be easier.  Make sure you have followed the
  104. above Installation instructions before proceeding.

  108. --Editing Pages--
  109.  
  110. JustEdit can be used to edit ANY web page on your web site.  The
  111. steps that follow will explain how to edit one page on your site,
  112. and will apply to all pages on your site.  You can even open
  113. multiple pages and edit them together.
  114.  
  115.      1.) Using your web browser, identify the web page you would
  116. like to edit and make a note of the name of the page and the path
  117. to the file.  For example, if you want to edit the web page that
  118. exists at the URL http://www.yourdomain.com/index.html, then the
  119. name of the page and path you need to make a note of is simply
  120. "index.html".  However, if the page is found at the URL
  121. http://www.yourdomain.com/coolstuff/tiger.html, then the name of
  122. the page and the path you need to make a note of is
  123. "coolstuff/tiger.html".
  124.  
  125.      2.)  Using your web browser, open your JustEdit page --
  126. located on your own web site.  Unless you have changed its name, the
  127. page will be found at: http://www.yourdomain.com/justedit/justedit.html
  128. (where "www.yourdomain.com" is the URL of your website).

  130.      3.) Enter your name, password, and the name and path to the
  131. page you want to edit, then press the "Open" button.  Your name and
  132. password are the same ones given to you by your ISP or network
  133. administrator.  The name of the page you want to edit is the one
  134. you made a note of in step #1, plus any special FTP path name
  135. requirements.  For example, if your web page is served from a
  136. directory named "public_html", you will need to add this to the
  137. beginning of the path name to your page.  In the examples used in
  138. step #1, the index.html page would look like,
  139. "public_html/index.html".  Think of the name and path to your page
  140. as the full FTP path name beginning after the domain name.
  141.  
  142.      4.) Edit the contents of your web page using the text edit
  143. window that is now open on your screen.  Keep in mind that this is
  144. a very simple text editor which allows to you edit the HTML code.
  145. It is not a web page-layout editor.  You can re-size the window by
  146. dragging its lower right corner or using the minimize/maximize
  147. button.  You can also re-size the text displayed in the editor by
  148. clicking the font size buttons in the lower left corner of the edit
  149. window (the default size is always 12 pt).

  151.      5.) When finished editing your page, click the Save button in
  152. the bottom right corner of the text edit window.  The save button
  153. will perform a "safe save" function.  That is, it will first rename
  154. the original file with a ".bak" extension.  Second, it will save
  155. the edited file.  Last, and only after the newly edited file has
  156. been transferred successfully, it will delete the ".bak" file.

  158.     6) If you are viewing the edited web page, you will need to
  159. Refresh your browser to see any changes.

  162. That's it!  You can edit any page on the web site containing
  163. JustEdit as long as you have the correct name and password for the
  164. web site.  Use JustEdit to correct typos, update headlines, prices,
  165. or dates, and even correct broken or changed links on the fly in
  166. your browser.  You'll find editing web pages so simple, you'll do
  167. it more often!

  171. --Changing Parameters--
  172.  
  173. There are five parameters that can be modified to customize your
  174. JustEdit page.  Change any of the following parameters by editing
  175. the justedit/index.html page on your web site using JustEdit:
  176.  
  177. <param name="BGColor" value="#66CCFF">:  Changes the background
  178. color of the JustEdit log-in fields.  Enter any valid html color
  179. (hex).
  180.  
  181. <param name="Host" value="ftp.yourdomain.com">: Changes the FTP
  182. site JustEdit logs in to (see step #3 in the Installation section
  183. above).
  184.  
  185. <param name="User" value="">: Entering a value between the quote
  186. marks will make JustEdit remember your user name--allowing you
  187. faster log in.  Keep in mind that supplying your name here will
  188. make your ftp access less secure.  For the highest level of
  189. security, it is always best to leave this value blank.

  191. <param name="Pass" value="">:  Entering a value between the quote
  192. marks will make JustEdit remember your password--allowing you
  193. faster log in.  Keep in mind that supplying your name here will
  194. make your ftp access less secure.  For the highest level of
  195. security, it is always best to leave this value blank.

  197. <param name="Path" value="">:  Entering a value between the quote
  198. marks will make JustEdit remember a path to a file.  Doing so will
  199. save you time editing a specific page.  For example, entering
  200. "public_html/users/coolstuff/" will make it easier to edit pages in
  201. the "coolstuff" directory of your web site.  Entering
  202. "public_html/users/coolstuff/mypage.html" will make it easy to edit
  203. the specific page, "mypage.html".

  207. --Other Tips--
  208.  
  209. If you regularly edit several pages, you can create multiple
  210. JustEdit log-in fields on a single page.  Simply duplicate the html
  211. code in the justedit/index.html page beginning with the line
  212. "<applet" and ending with the line "</applet>" and paste it several
  213. times in the page.  Next, change each of the <param name="Path"
  214. value=""> lines to have the values of the pages you wish to
  215. regularly edit.  Now, editing a specific page will be a simple
  216. matter of going to your JustEdit page and entering your name and
  217. password into the appropriate JustEdit log-in fields.

  219. You can open and edit more than one page simultaneously.  Even if
  220. you only have one JustEdit log-in field on your JustEdit page, you
  221. can open as many pages as you like for editing.  Simply open one
  222. page, then click on the browser window displaying the JustEdit
  223. log-in field.  Next, enter a new page name and path in the "Path"
  224. field.  Repeating these steps several times will allow you to open
  225. and edit several pages at the same time.

  227. You can use Cut, Copy, and Paste in the JustEdit page editor window
  228. using the keyboard shortcuts Control-X, Control-C, and Control-V
  229. (Windows users only).

  233. KNOWN PROBLEMS

  236. 1.) Macintosh users may experience some difficulty using Netscape
  237. Communicator 4.5.

  240. paste in the text edit window.
