  10. ARC is used to create and maintain file archives.  An archive is a
  11. group of files collected together into one file in such a way that the
  12. individual files may be recovered intact.
  13.  
  14. ARC is different from other archive and library utilities in that it
  15. automatically compresses the files being archived, so that the
  16. resulting archive takes up a minimum amount of space.
  17.  
  18. When ARC is used to add a file to an archive it analyzes the file to
  19. determine which of four storage methods will result in the greatest
  20. savings.  Since one of the four methods involves no compression at
  21. all, the resulting archive entry will never be larger than the
  22. original file.

  24. ARC provides commands to perform the following functions:

  26.     add files to archive
  27.     move files to archive
  28.     update files in archive
  29.     refresh archive entries from disk
  30.     delete files from archive
  31.     extract files from archive
  32.     run files from archive
  33.     copy files from archive to standard output
  34.     list files in archive
  35.     verbose listing of files in archive
  36.     test archive integrity
  37.     convert entries to newer or different packing methods
  38.  
  39. ARC also provides options for the following:

  41.     retain backup copy of archive
  42.     suppress warning messages
  43.     suppress notes and comments
  44.     suppress compression
  45.     archive encryption
