  1.                        How to Build Black Powder

  7.      Black powder can be prepared in a simple, safe manner.  It
  8. may be used as blasting or gun powder.
  9.  
  10. Material required:                       Quantity:
  11. -----------------                        --------

  13. potassium nitrate --- granulated ---------  3 cups
  14. wood charcoal --------- powdered ---------  2 cups
  15. sulfur ---------------- powdered --------- 1/2 cup
  16. alcohol - (whiskey, rubbing alcohol) ----- 5 pints
  17. Water ------------------------------------  3 cups
  18. heat source
  19. 2 buckets -- each 2 gallon capacity, at least one of which is    
  20.                      heat resistant (metal, ceramic, etc.) Flat
  21. window screening ------- at least 1 ft. Square
  22. large wooden stick
  23. cloth ----------------------- at least 2 ft. Square
  24.  
  25. note: the above amounts will yield 2 ounds of black powder.

  27.     However, only the ratios of the amounts of the ingredients
  28. are important.
  29.     Thus, for twice as much black powder, double all quantities  
  30.     used.

  32. Procedure:
  33. ---------

  35. 1) place alcohol in one of the buckets
  36.  
  37. 2) place potassium nitrate, charcoal, and sulfur in the heat
  38. resistant bucket.  Add 1 cup water and mix thoroughly with wooden
  39. stick until all ingredients are dissolved.
  40.  
  41. 3) Add remaining water (2 cups) to mixture.  Place bucket on heat
  42.    source and stir until small bubbles begin to form.
  43.  
  44. Caution:  do not boil mixture.  Be sure all mixture stays wet. 
  45. If any is dry, as on sides of pan, it may ignite.
  46.  
  47. 4) Remove bucket from heat and pour mixture into alcohol while   
  48. stirring vigorously
  49.  
  50. 5) let alcohol stand about 5 minutes. Strain mixture through   
  51. cloth to obtain black powder.  Discard liquid. Wrap cloth   
  52. around black powder and squeeze to remove all excess liquid.

  54. 6) Place screening over dry bucket. Place workable amount of damp
  55.    powder on screen and granulate by rubbing solid through screen
  56.  
  57. note: if granulated particles appear to stick together and change
  58.       shape, recombine entire batch of powder and repeat steps 5 
  59.      & 6.

  61. 7) Spread granulated powder on flat dry surface so that layer   
  62. about 1/2 inch is formed.  Allow to dry.  Use radiator , or   
  63. direct sunlight.  This should be dried as soon as possible,   
  64. preferably in one hour.  The longer the drying period, the   
  65. less effective the black powder.

  67. Caution: remove from heat as soon as granules are dry.  Black    
  68.            powder is now ready for use.
