  1. BAD QUALITY of 3,5"-DISKS         #
  2. -------------------------         #

  4. This  is  a  general article about#
  5. the quality of 3,5"-disks.        #
  6. To the facts:                     #
  7. The US-firm Memory Control Techno-#
  8. logy  Corp. (Memcom) published the#
  9. results  of  a test concerning the#
  10. quality  of  3,5"-disks.  The main#
  11. result  was:  Most of the disks do#
  12. not   reach  the  ANSI-norms  (US-#
  13. institute   of  industrial  norms,#
  14. comparable  with  the german DIN).#
  15. Memcom  (Omaha/Nebraska)  produces#
  16. copy-machines  and copies software#
  17. for  big  firms.  Memcom copies an#
  18. average  of  half  a million disks#
  19. per  months  (250000  of  that are#
  20. 3,5").                            #
  21. Memcom  had  an  increasing error-#
  22. rate,  so  they  decided  to  test#
  23. disks  of  25 producers.  So  they#
  24. bought  100  disks from each firm.#
  25. They   tested   all   disks   with#
  26. several  mechanical & electronical#
  27. methods.    Memcom    tested   the#
  28. stability   and   the   mechanics/#
  29. mechanism,  the  ability  to label#
  30. them, of course the data-security,#
  31. maximum - capacity  -  all   in  a#
  32. permanent  "stress"  situation  of#
  33. the  disks.  The  tests refered to#
  34. the last ANSI-norm.               #
  35. The results were horrible:        #
  36. One  of hundred disks contained an#
  37. error.  Only  disks  of  IBM, KAO,#
  38. TDK,   Memorex  and  C.Itoh  could#
  39. stand  up  to  the ANSI-norms. All#
  40. others  of  the  25, had an above-#
  41. average  failing-quote. Disks from#
  42. Verbatim,  Sony, Syncom, Polaroid,#
  43. Maxell  and  Fuji  got  the second#
  44. place   in  this  high-score-list.#
  45. SKC,  Wabash, Xidex and Dysan were#
  46. the worst of the test.            #
  47. The  consequences for Memcon: they#
  48. will  working  in the future first#
  49. and foremost with TDK-disks.      #
  50. In 1987, when Memcom tested 5,25"-#
  51. disks  the  results  were similar.#
  52. That  time  BASF was best. But the#
  53. producers  took  it as an inspira-#
  54. tion  and  improved the quality of#
  55. the  5,25"  disks. I hope that the#
  56. same  will  happen  with the 3,5"-#
  57. disk.                             #
