  6.   The Sun newspaper (March 6th 1993) carried a story titled :-

  8.                IF YOU FIRE ME YOUR COMPUTER DESTRUCTS
  9.   
  10.   The writer, Keiron Saunders (credit to him for bringing this to 
  11. my attention) tells of "Computer wizard Charlie Gunn" who took his 
  12. rightful (in my opinion) revenge on his bosses in a row over a 
  13. money-saving scheme he had devised. So that you can decide what
  14. you think, I have typed out the article below in full.

  18. Computer wizard Charlie Gunn took his
  19. high-tech revenge on his bosses in a row
  20. over a money-saving scheme he devised.
  21.   They didn't even thank him when he
  22. gave them the program free, he said
  23. yesterday.
  24.   So he bugged the system - which
  25. tracked 2,500 bikes hired out at a
  26. holiday village - to self destruct if
  27. he were fired.
  28.   Charlie's bosses did sack him - after
  29. he refused to debug the program. Seven 
  30. days later it wiped itself out.
  31.   Yesterday an industrial tribunal at
  32. Bury St Edmunds decided he had been
  33. dismissed fairly.
  34.   Charlie, 36, said he devised the
  35. computer program (program was spelt
  36. incorrectly here - Gears) in his own
  37. time to check on bikes he was in charge
  38. of at Center Parcs holiday village in
  39. Elveden, Suffolk.
  40.   It cut out the need for written
  41. records and saved the firm 45,000
  42. (pounds sterling) in nine months,
  43. he claimed.

  47.   The dad of three, from Hillborough,
  48. Norfolk, said: "I worked really hard
  49. to invent the program." (This was spelt
  50. incorrectly again - Gears)
  51.   "I got upset when I saw another
  52. Center Parcs camp might copy it without
  53. paying me."
  54.   The tribunal was told Center Parcs have
  55. now bought their own computer system for
  56. bikes.
  57.   They disputed Charlie's claim that he
  58. saved them 45,000 (pounds sterling).

  61.   I noticed a few things as I read this article, one is that 
  62. the headline is VERY misleading .... there was absolutely NO 
  63. chance that the computer would "SELF DESTRUCT". I also noticed 
  64. that the reporter could not distinguish the word "Program" which, 
  65. as the dictionary states is set of `detailed instructions for a 
  66. computer' and "Programme" which refers to a TV or radio programme. 
  67. Many people get these words mixed up.
  68.   I felt that Charlie was right to be annoyed at the company for 
  69. not paying him for his program. He should have insisted from the 
  70. start that he wouldn't give it to them unless they payed for it. He 
  71. may have saved a lot of trouble by officially Copyrighting it as 
  72. commercial software and therefore making it illegal for the company 
  73. to copy it around. I did like his plan to delete the program....it 
  74. was an idea I might have used if I were in a similar situation. I 
  75. emphasize, for the benefit of those spying eyes at FAST the word 
  76. "MIGHT". The definition of this word is in the dictionary.
