  13. would have sussed that people }7DO
  14. {7own the new machine, and therefore
  15. want games that work.  But, no, let's
  16. just keep the same, non-working
  17. protection guys, why bother?.
  18. {2Kickstart 2.0 {7has only been around
  19. for a couple of years, after all.
  20. Worse than this is the {1crackers and
  21. trainers {7which turn a piece of
  22. working software into a {6formatted
  23. disk.  {7Watch that power light
  24. }2flash!  {7 Please, guys, if you're
  25. going to crack a game, {5please
  26. {7check it runs on the A500+ as well.
  27. Please?  Pretty please?  If anyone has
  28. a working A500+ version of
  29. {6`Mega-lo-Mania',{7 contact me!

  34. {7 OK, it has to be expected that
  35. there will be software that is
  36. incompatible.  But most of this is due
  37. to {2lousy coding!  {7Games which
  38. start up, say to themselves {5"Aha!
  39. Expansion Memory!  Into Fast RAM with
  40. my data!"{7, and then crashes because
  41. there isn't any bloody {4Fast {7RAM,
  42. just {5chip, chip {7and more {5chip{7!
  43.    Some other software seems prone to
  44. screen corruption, as if the modulo is
  45. set wrong.  }2Surely {7this could be
  46. fixed my a small piece of code.
  47. Anyone out there going to knock a
  48. routine up?  {4Demos, intros and
  49. {5trainers {7seem particularly prone
  50. to this...
  51.    (I think you'll find that this
  52. problem can be solved by allocating
  53. {4`absolute' {7memory instead of
  54. {4fastmem.  {7A small program running
  55. in the background trapping non-working
  56. code, would seem to be an interesting
  57. idea!  {3Coders??  {5-Ed.{7)
  58.    There is some (mostly PD) software
  59. that won't run properly, as KS2.04
  60. doesn't immediately open up a screen
  61. after booting; it waits until
  62. something is output to the screen.
  63. This causes software such as NUKE 1.3b
  64. and slideshows to appear without any
  65. text, or not appear at all.  Luckily,
  66. this is easily fixed, just shove an
  67. {5"Echo"{7 at the start of the
  68. startup-sequence.

  72. {7 Why!?!  "Hey guys, we've just
  73. changed a {2pixel {7at the top left of
  74. the screen, let's call it {6version
  75. 10.4{7".  A few weeks later ...
  76. "Well, that's the mouse pointer speed
  77. changed, time for version 12.3..."
  78.    In normal circumstances, a
  79. manufacturer would release a piece of
  80. software as version 1.0.  A few months
  81. later, bug reports would be flooding
  82. in, so they fix these, add a few
  83. features, and release version 1.1.
  84. The process of refinement goes on, up
  85. to (say) 1.5.  A couple of years after
  86. the original launch, version 2.0 is
  87. released, and the whole process
  88. continues over again.
  89.    In the past 6 months, I have
  90. recieved 4 {3(count 'em) {74 different
  91. versions of {4XCopy.{7 And what's the
  92. difference between them?.  Well, 6.4
  93. has new graphics, you can switch to
  94. 60HZ and there are a few minor bugs
  95. fixed, but }4BUGGER ALL ELSE!
  96. {7There's very little different to
  97. XCopy 3.4, which wasn't that far apart
  98. from XCopy 2.2!  Fine, it's probably
  99. the worlds most popular Amiga disk
  100. copier (although I prefer {6SuperDuper
  101. 2.0 {7myself), but let's not go
  102. overboard, hmmm?  Especially since
  103. }7Cyclone {7(bundled with XCopy) is
  104. hopeless.

  113. Brothers{7, probably the crappest game
  114. of all time, with its uncontrollable
  115. characters, and unplayable two player
  116. mode.  And the music - }7barf!  {7 I
  117. bet the wonderful playable demo that
  118. AF gave satisfied the public, didn't
  119. it...  especially since it {3didn't
  120. work{7 on most machines.  They forgot
  121. that a {5snapshot{7 from an {2Action
  122. Replay cartridge {7would only run on
  123. machines with the same configuarion.
  124. And when you died ...  {2sorry
  125. folks{7, time to reset the machine,
  126. and load again!  {4If I was Titus, I'd
  127. sue.

  141. it would appear.  Great for contacting
  142. coders, eh?  I suppose that's what he
  143. takes all the appeals for

  149. {7 It's criminal ...  I'm typing this
  150. on a {3B2000{7, with {28 {7Megs of
  151. Fast RAM, 1 Meg of chip, an {168020{7
  152. accelerator board, {4PC bridgeboard,
  153. {6extra floppy,{7 and {452Meg hard
  154. drive{7.  It's one of 3 in this room,
  155. and there are 4 A500s, with 2 Megs,
  156. extra drives etc.  and what do we use
  157. them for?  }4DPAINT!  {7 Next to me is
  158. a {5Panasonic VW-EC300 {7Video Editing
  159. Controller, linked to 2 {3SVHS
  160. {7Stereo video decks.  This is
  161. connected to this conputer via a G2
  162. genlock/VideoCentre.  Currently there
  163. are only {52 {7people in the school
  164. that know how to use this equipment -
  165. Me and a friend (Hi, Pete).  The
  166. teacher in charge of this room, from
  167. the Art Department (naturally), hasn't
  168. got a snowballs chance of getting
  169. anywhere with it.  He's still reading
  170. the manual.
  171.    But never mind, because said Art
  172. Teacher has just left for a term, to
  173. go around other schools in the area,
  174. telling them how to use computers...

  178.    I loved the first Lesuire Suit
  179. Larry.  Not only was it a great game,
  180. but it came on one disk.  Now we're up
  181. to LSL 5 (were did LSL 4 go?), and
  182. it's SEVEN disks.  Fine for those with
  183. a hard drive, but for floppy users
  184. (even with a second drive), you had
  185. better get used to swapping those
  186. disks every time you ever a new
  187. location.  The game becomes unplayable
  188. before the player has got anywere, and
  189. the player gives up.

  197. ...  I'm sure I've seen that font
  198. before, though...  and that parallax
  199. star effect ...  and that vector
  200. object ...  and those bob stars ...
  201. and ....
  202.    Listen, folks, the {2RSI-Demomaker
  203. {7just doesn't look original anymore.
  204. Great for showing your mother how good
  205. a coder you are (splutter), but PLEASE
  206. no more rehashed single-file
  207. compilations with your "groups" RSI-DM
  208. intro at the start.  Leave it to the
  209. big boys, hmmm?  (Look at Crystals,
  210. LSDs, Vision Factorys intros, and
  211. you'll see why...)

  215.    There aren't too many of these, but
  216. you'll know when you get one.  The
  217. German ones reverse the y and z keys,
  218. giving zou some strange looking words.
  219. The French has the q and a's reverse,
  220. which cqn be auite qnnoying.
  221.    And it's not just a case of a
  222. simple "Setmap GB", because these
  223. buggers read the keyboard directly.

  245. supposed `teams of experts' slagged
  246. off the whole way in which the scene
  247. works {5fucking discusting.  {7I
  248. haven't got the actual article here
  249. because I personally never buy the
  250. magazine, but I remember some comments
  251. about how we slag off
  252. {4computer-illiterates {7by calling
  253. them `lamers'.  They said something
  254. along the lines of it being
  255. {6`socially backward'.  {7Socially
  256. backward!  Bloody cheek!  {1In my view
  257. it's just jealousy!  {4AF {7could
  258. never get away with printing the
  259. articles Grapevine does, and
  260. furthermore if GV was sold in shops at
  261. 3 quid a go as AF is, I know which one
  262. I'd buy.  The {6Amiga Format {7team in
  263. fact know very little about the Amiga,
  264. and would never get involved with the
  265. scene because of the scene's elitism.
  266. I know this is a {1soap-box lecture{7,
  267. but I think you'll agree that when
  268. {2ST/Amiga {7format split up, the
  269. Amiga side got a very raw deal.....
