Black and Blue Marks on Our Psyches: Changes every Wednesday

Kudo's to Harper's Bazaar and Kim France for their terrific article about women's zines online. Okay, we're biased because we're mentioned (along with Minx, Bust, and gURL), but it's great that a major fashion glossy is calling women's online self-publishing a "our most vital forum for women's issues." Hooray!

Gianni Versace's violent death gave the media a prime opportunity to sensationalize. Newspapers nationwide published photos of the blood-drenched steps of Versace's Miami villa. Now, is that really necessary?

The suspect is serial killer Andrew Cunanan, formerly known as a high-priced homosexual prostitute. So the media speculation goes, "Was Versace connected to the suspect?" As if to imply in thinly-veiled homophobia that Versace was somehow asking for it by being gay. The answer is: It doesn't matter.

Let the man rest in peace, and let someone come forward and identify the suspect before he kills again. Unless he kills himself, which might be a really good idea.

From contributor Sarah Grove:

In New York magazine's July 14th review of Batman and Robin, David Denby says:

"Chris O'Donnell regresses into teenage nowheresville as a combative Robin ... and he's been given an unappealing mate -- Alicia Silverstone ... Is this really the actress who seemed so promising in Clueless? Some way has to be found of photographing Silverstone so it doesn't appear that a pad is stuck under her upper lip. She seems plagued by baby fat, and her threadbare gung ho enthusiasm turns the picture into a cloying TV teen show."

So Chris O'Donnell's performance merely goes "nowheresville," but Alicia Silverstone's performance has something to do with baby fat? Are the critics who praised Silverstone for her smart and sweet portrayal in Clueless now looking to tear her down? They called her fat for looking beautiful in Vera Wang at the 1996 Academy Awards, and now "baby fat" enters into discussions of her acting.

Give it up, fellas. Alicia Silverstone is a beautiful, healthy young woman who's out there kicking ass with Batman and Robin. Holy double standard.
