This month we'll visit the wilds of South Africa

Travel has been a part of my life since I started my career. Visiting other countries has made me really appreciate the diverse cultures and peoples we have in America.

Even with my love of home, I still find foreign travel exciting! France, Singapore, Hong Kong, Fiji, and Malaysia are all stamps you will find on my passport.

From time to time, we'll explore new places together right here in Destinations. We'll look at different customs, foods, languages, and landscapes that make every culture unique. This month, I'm excited to take you to...South Africa

Tips
Getting married in another country may sound exotic, but every country has its own laws. If you get married in France, for instance, you must first spend 40 days there to fulfill the residency requirement. In England, either the groom or bride has to be there 15 days prior to the nuptials. In Portugal, you must be a citizen before you can be legally married there. Scotland and Switzerland have no residency requirements, but in Scotland you cannot have a rabbi perform a religious interfaith ceremony.

The type of ceremony, civil or religious, varies from country to country. In Greece, an eight day residency requirement is all that is needed to exchange vows in a civil ceremony, but you have to first list the impending marriage in the local newspaper. That will give anyone the opportunity to voice their objections!

Each country also has specific documentation requirements. In some Mexican cities you need health certificates from a Mexican doctor, and in many countries government days and hours are not the same as in America. So if you want your wedding day to come off without a hitch, check with the consulate of the country you are considering for your wedding day, and find out all the laws you'll need to obey before you legally tie the knot.
