Internet 101: The Netiquette of Outreach

Use caution in doing Outreach. Here are some pointers.

1. You own your own words. Take responsibility for anything you say and don't allow others to use what you say without your permission.

2. Learn the style of text only communication. No YELLING, please. I *mean* it.

3. Feel free to email anyone you want, but not as part of a larger list. Sending personal email is one thing, sending unsolicited junk email is another. Using lists is fine if you first ask people if they want to be on your mailing list.

4. If you set up a mailing list, make it clear how people can unsubscribe (get off the list).

5. Provide useful information rather than solicit. Allow people to contact you for additional information -- and this can be where solicitation takes place.

6. ASK! If you want to post something in a newsgroup and you have a concern, ask the moderator if the posting would be appropriate.

7. Don't take flames personally. If it was as easy to reply to direct mail as it is to reply to email, organizations would be flamed all the time. Odds are someone is going to dislike anything that looks like it might be marketing - from asking for volunteers to seeking in-kind donations. Expect some flames but don't get too upset by them.
