Internet 101: Wavey's Usenetiquette Primer
From FutureNet : .net 1, Dec '94 - Easy Internet
To make Usenet a fairly flame-free zone, at least as far as your
mailbox is concerned, bear in mind these simple guidelines
- Always read the newsgroup FAQ, if there is one, before you start posting.
- Don't cross post between newsgroups, and certainly avoid `spamming.' Spamming is posting annoying advertising material to hundreds, even thousands, of newsgroups across the board.
- Don't quote a complete message only to add "I agree" at the bottom.
- Don't use a signature of more than four lines, and certainly don't include a three-page ASCII graphic!
- Post to relevant newsgroups. Posting a question about pig farming in a Windows NT forum probably isn't a good idea.
- Don't SHOUT, AS THIS IS DIFFICULT TO READ! TYPING IN UPPER CASE IS REGARDED AS SHOUTING WHEN ON-LINE. See what I mean - it gives you a headache, doesn't it?
- Don't post messages which have a line length of more than 80 characters, or which contain non-standard ASCII characters. (Remember that the people reading your message will be using all sorts of computers and some of them won't be able to cope.)
