Internet 101: How does it work?

In basic terms, two computers connected together form a local area network. When two local area networks connect, you have a configuration called 'internet' with a small 'i'. The Internet (with the BIG "I") is the largest connection of interconnected computers ever created.

The idea for the Internet came out of the US Defense Department's concern that single disaster could disable their computer systems. The Internet, because it is a web-like network of smaller computers, can operate without any one set of computers operating.

Who Pays for this?
In the past governments and universities foot the bill for these systems. Increasingly, parts of being sold off to commercial organizations who expect to make a profit. One major concern is that educational and nonprofit organizations are going to be left out as costs rise.

Just as you don't need to know much about the internal combustion engine to drive a car, you really don't need to know more than this to use the Internet.
