Creating a facet is the generation of a surface using several points (three or more). This is what the Facet Extract tool does.
|
Note: Facets created with this tool will be considered a distinct object. If you want them integrated with the current object, you will need to group the facets with the object.
The Facet Extraction tool used on a NURBS object will generate polygonal facets.
q Manual facet extraction (with the Bullseye or the Lasso)
The user specifies the points on the current object that will be used to generate the facets.
The difference between the facet extraction using the Bullseye and the Lasso is:
¨ The Bullseye allows point-by-point selection on any objects present in the scene (current or not).
¨ The Lasso allows points to be selected only on the current object.
1. Make sure, if you intend to make a selection using the Lasso, that the current object is the right one.
2. Select the Facet Extract tool.
Click on the icon depicting the Facet Extract tool in the Tools Palette.
When you select the Facet Extract tool, the Bullseye selection tool appears.
3. Select the points that will define the facet(s).
You can select them either with:
The Bullseye (default selection tool): select the points one by one and go to step 4.
Or
The Lasso: there are two ways to activate this selection tool:
1st method: Select the tool using the Assistant Palette
Click on the corresponding icon.
2nd method: Select the tool using the mouse
Þ On PC: Click the right mouse button.
Or
Þ On Mac: Press the Option key and simultaneously click the mouse button.
The Lasso replaces the Bullseye. Surround the group of points of interest.
4. Validate the selection with the Return key.
3. Go back to step 3 if you need to build additional facets.
Note: All of the facets generated during the same session will be considered a single object. If you want to generate different objects, you will need to drop the tool and then re-select it.
4. Ending the tool action.
Validate or put the tool aside to end the tool action (depending on the interface). See chapter User Manual/Tools/Generic use of a tool/How do you end a tool action?

q Automatic facet extraction
This method will automatically create the facets needed to cap an object. For example, applying the automatic facet extraction method on an open cylinder will create two discs closing the cylinder.
1. Have open elements present in the scene.
As this method creates facets only at the edges of the openings of an element, it will have no effect on a closed object, such as a cube or a sphere.
2. Select the Facet Extract tool.
Click on the icon depicting the Facet Extract tool in the Tools Palette.
The Bullseye selection tool is displayed.
3. Starting the extraction.
Press the Return key.
One or several facets are created capping all the openings of the selected object. The Bullseye selection tool is still active and available.
4. You can proceed to a manual extraction if necessary (see previous paragraph).
5. Ending the tool action.
Validate or put the tool aside to end the tool action (depending on the interface). See chapter User Manual/Tools/Generic use of a tool/How do you end a tool action?
