Custom encoding settings—general
View or modify general settings for the profile.
- Name and Description. If you are creating a , type a name for the profile. Do not include an asterisk (*) in the name. The description is optional.
- Language. Select the language for the content. (The default is the lanaguage of the encoding computer.) If you encode content in different languges, users can select their language during playback.
- Import and Export. Click Import to import an existing profile for editing. Profiles have the .prx file name extension. Click Export to save the edits you have made to a profile under a different name. (To save a profile to its existing name, click Save and Close.)
- Media types. Specify the combination of source types you want this profile to support. If you select scripts, you can insert into a stream while encoding. Each source type consumes part of the bandwidth used when you encode. Select the mode you want to use for audio and video from the list. To use one-pass encoding, click CBR. You can also select the codecs you want to use. Note that not all codecs support the VBR modes or two-pass CBR encoding.
- Target bit rates. Lists the bit rates that are currently selected (except for quality-based VBR encoding because it is not possible to determine the bit rate in advance). To create a different bit rate for your content, click Add. (For the VBR encoding modes, this option is not available if there is an existing bit rate in the list.) To customize a bit rate, select a bit rate, and then click Edit. You must select at least one bit rate.
- Compatibility. Select the Check for compatibility with Windows Media Player 7.1 check box if you think your content will be played in Windows Media Player 7.1. If you select the check box, you are prompted with a message when you adjust a setting that makes your content no longer compatible for playback on Windows Media Player 7.1. Windows Media Player 7.1 can play content that is encoded with the Windows Media Audio 9 and Windows Media Video 8.1 codecs and does not require an automatic codec download to play the content.
- Video format. Specify the format of your source video (either NTSC or PAL). If you change the frame rate or video size to a nonstandard setting, the format is automatically selected as Custom.
- Allow interlaced processing. Select if your content is interlaced and you want the encoded output to remain interlaced. (You must also select the Maintain interlacing option on the Processing tab.)
- Allow nonsquare pixel output. Select if the source video uses rectangular pixels (for example, if your source is from digital video), or if the source video has an aspect ratio that differs from 4:3 and you want to retain the aspect ratio in the encoded output. You can control the aspect ratio on the Video Size tab.
