Internet Explorer 4 introduced a new tag, <marquee>. This provides an easy way of making text scroll across a page in a variety of different ways, but you
must be aware that it only works in recent versions of Internet Explorer. Other information apart from plain text can be included, such as images and tables, but
it is not recommended as it can be very slow on some computers.
Marquee 1
Description
This sort of marquee effect can be used to highlight important information about a service or product on your site. If a browser is used which does not support
the marquee tag, the text is still shown as normal.
How To Make It
First, type in the text you want to scroll, "Important Information". Select this text, and load the Marquee Wizard using the Insert | Scrolling Text menu item. All
the information on the first page of this wizard can be left as the defaults, as the wizard should automatically have filled in the text to scroll as the selected text,
we want the text to scroll from right to left, 32 pixels per second is a reasonable speed and we don't need a margin around the text. Click on Next to set up the
remaining options.
To highlight the information, set the background colour to yellow. To make the text scroll a reasonable distance across the page, set the width of the marquee
to 200 pixels. Since we are only scrolling a single line of text, we can reduce the height to around 20 pixels. The alignment of the effect can be left as Top.
Click on Finish to apply the effect.
Marquee 2
Description
Marquee effects can also be used to create effects similar to the scrolling credits seen at the end of movies - white text scrolling vertically on a black background.
How To Make It
Again, type the text in first, including the carriage returns at the <font> tag which makes the text appear white. To do this, select the text, click on the down arrow next to the font colour button on the formatting toolbar and select white. Next, select all the text including the font tags and load the marquee wizard in the same way as for the first example. Again, the text to scroll has automatically been added to the text box at the top of the wizard. Next, select the scroll vertically option, and select bottom to top scrolling from the drop down list next to the vertical option. You can again leave the speed, repeats and margin settings on their defaults. Click on Next. Now, select black as the background colour, and change the dimensions to 300 wide by 200 high. Click on Finish to create the effect.
