Naming Files

When you are saving files which will be published on the web, it is important to think about what you are going to call them. It order to create a link to a page you need to know what it is called, so always give your files useful names which are related to what the file is about. Also, it is recommended that you always use lowercase letters for you file names, as UNIX, the operating system on which the web runs, is case sensitive and so anyone wanting to visit your pages will have to remember which letters are in upper case if you use any. Also, do not use spaces in your file names as these can be difficult to remember and each space must be converted to "%20" when being used in URL's.

Remember to name the main page home.html so that the people using your pages only have to type in the name of the directory in which your web site is stored on the server to access the page. Browsers automatically look for a file called home.html if they are only given the name of a server or a subdirectory within the server.
