The 32 Bit Plug-In for Windows 95 Beta Test release 0.8
Posted March/18/96
This is version 0.8. It has all the features of the release version
coming soon. If you previously installed the SCREAM Plug-In, you should
download the new version. The install program is not available yet so you
MUST follow these instructions.
Installing the SCREAM Plug-In
First, download the file "NPScr16.zip" for Windows 3.1, or "NPScr32.zip"
for Windows 95. Then, find "netscape.exe" on your hard drive.
Check that it is version 2.0 or higher. You can do this in Windows 95 by
clicking on "netscape.exe" with the right mouse button, and choosing
properties.
If it doesn't already exist, create a new folder in the SAME directory as
"netscape.exe" and name it "plugins", spelled exactly
like it is here, without the quotes.
Unzip the NPScrXX.zip file, (you need PKunzip 2.0 or better) and place the
file "NPScr16.dll" or "NPScr32.dll" in your "plugins"
folder.
Setting up Netscape
When you start Netscape 2.0, select the menu items "Options" and
"General Preferences". Then select "Helpers".
You will need to tell Netscape about the new MIME type called "application/x-SCREAM".
Choose "Create New Type" and enter: "application" for
the MIME Type, and "x-SCREAM" for the MIME SubType, (without the
quotes). Click "OK", and enter: "nmz" in the File Extensions
(again without the quotes) and press Return. In a few weeks we will be releasing
an install program.
If you download the "Download.zip" file below, unzip it, and place
it in your Windows directory, SCREAM will display it as a default animation
while downloading the first file. This is not needed for SCREAM to function
properly.
In the next few weeks we will be posting a selection of different
"Download" animations.
SCREAM creates VERY SMALL animation files that can be loaded in a fraction of a second and run for up to 40 minutes! They can be downloaded from any BBS or over the Internet in seconds. Up to 256 animation files may be strung together in a Virtual Playlist that can run for 48 hours or more! A CD Rom could (at least in theory) contain many months of SCREAM based animations.
SCREAM is multi-tasking and can run in the background while you surf the Net. It can display cool looking ( very cartoon-like ) animations in a resizable player window, full screen, or as your desktop wallpaper. You can continue to work on your computer while SCREAM makes your desktop come alive with motion and colour.
Midi and Wave file playback
General Midi (music) files, and .WAV files can be linked to SCREAM animations. Bitmap backgrounds are also supported, however, even .MID files tend to be much larger than SCREAM .NMZ files, and will increase download times.
Go to the SCREAM page
WARNING! If you want to hear the music, you must have a sound card properly
set up for .mid and .wav playback or you will get an error message from
Windows when you try to select the music files.
This is the last Beta version. If you have problems, please let
us know at inquire@savedbytech.com
If it doesn't work!
System Requirements:
A 486 Mhz DX2 or faster is recommended for best playback speed. A high
quality graphics card will greatly improve SCREAM performance as well.
At least 8 meg of ram with Win 3.1 or 16 meg of ram with Win 95 is needed
for the SCREAM Plug-In to work without virtual memory turned on.
Screen resolution and Bit Depth (number of colours) also can dramatically
increase memory requirements if they are set higher than 640x480 and 256
colours.
If you have virtual memory turned off and the Plug-In fails to load, try
turning on virtual memory.
If you are using 800x600 and 16 Bit colour or higher, you may need to increase
the size of the virtual memory swap file.
To install the SCREAM Plug-In.
If you are having trouble getting the Plug-In to work, please double-check
the following:
-----------------------------------------------------------------
You MUST use the correct Plug-In for your system.
If you are using Windows 3.x you must use the 16 bit Plug-In (NPScr16.dll).
If you are using Windows 95 you must use the 32 bit Plug-In (NPScr32.dll).
Both of these are supplied as .ZIP files and must be un-zipped with PKUNZIP
version 2.0 or later before being placed in the "plugins" folder.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
You MUST add the Mime type to your Helpers section in the Netscape options.
The MIME type is "application" and the Subtype is "x-SCREAM"
(without the quotes).
You MUST set the File Extensions to "nmz", and make sure that
the Action is set to "Unknown" or nothing at all.
The resulting line in your Helpers list should look like this:
application/x-SCREAM
nmz
-----------------------------------------------------------------
This procedure has been used succesfully on thousands of PCs, and should
be all that is required.
If you have done all this correctly (correct spelling is essential!) and
it still refuses to work, please let us know at inquire@savedbytech.com
An install program should be available very soon to make our lives a bit
easier.
