CallServe is a great Internet telephony application that should save you money. It lets you call any conventional phone, so the person at the other end doesn't need to have the CallServe software installed on their own PC.

Once the software is installed, you need to register to use the service. When that's done you can pre-pay for your calls via credit card, in increments of ú10, ú20 or ú50. To make a call, simply get online and dial a phone number pretty much as you would with a conventional phone.

You will need a full duplex soundcard (to allow two-way conversations) and a headset or handset. There are options to adjust sound quality and to keep track of your call time. See this month's magazine feature for more information.

Eudora is a popular email application that will handle all your email needs. There are several additions in this version, including enhanced filtering, SSL support and the ability to drag and drop attachments from messages. The manual in PDF format is in the same folder on the CD.

To seek out a friend on the ICQ network, simply enter his or her ICQ number, name, nickname, or email address. Once your contact list is set up, you'll be notified when your friends are online so that you can chat, send instant messages or files, play games and more.
