Objective: In Landslide, you must arrange the pieces to fit together. The pieces fall one at a time from the top of the screen towards the bottom. When they hit the bottom or another piece they will stop and a new piece will start falling. You can arrange the pieces by shifting the current piece left or right, or rotating it 90 degrees at a time. If you fill one horizontal line across the game board with boxes the line will flash and then disappear. Any above boxes will drop down into this space. If the boxes reach the top and there is no room to put a new piece you will get a game over. There is no "win" condition, it's just a matter of beating your own high score. The color and shape of each piece is random, but the color does not effect gameplay in any way.
The Landslide Window:
- 1 - The Game Screen: This is where you can move the pieces to fill lines. Most of the action takes place here.
- 2 - Speed Selection Box: Here you can change the speed that your game will start at. This disappears when a game begins.
- 3 - Game Button: When you first open Landslide this button reads "Start". Click it to start a new game.
- 4 - Line Counter: During a game this will display how many lines you have filled during that game.
- 5 - Speed Counter: Every time you fill 10 lines the speed of the game will increase by one until it has reached the maximum of 12. This counter displays the current speed.
- 6 - Score Counter: This counter keeps track of your score. If your score is high enough to be put on the high score list you will be asked for your name after you get a game over.
- 7 - Game Menus: A list of menu commands is as follows...
- Game | High Scores (F4) - Opens the high score window.
- Game | Quit (F3) - Exits the game.
- Options | Sound (Ctrl+S) - Toggles sound effects. Sound effects will only play if this is checked.
- Options | Music (Ctrl+M) - Toggles music. Music will only play if this is checked.
- Help | How to Play... (F1) - Opens up the help window (this window!).
- Help | About... (F2) - Opens up the about window which has some brief information about the game. It's the same thing you will find if you look at the Credits Section of this help file.
A Game in Action:
- 1 - Boxes: These are pieces that have been dropped an have accumulated because the lines were not filled.
- 2 - Current Piece: This is the piece that the player can currently move.
- 3 - Next Piece Preview: This shows what piece will be generated after you have placed the current piece.
- 4 - Game Button: When a game is in progress the button reads "Pause". Click it to pause game play. You will not be able to see the Game Screen or the Next Piece Preview. The button will now read "Play". Click it again to resume the game.
High Scores
Drop Points: Every time you successfully place a piece but do not fill a line (called a "drop"), your score increases by 5 points. This may not seem like a lot, but by the end of a game it adds up quite a bit.
Filling Lines: Filling one line (called a "single") earns you 100 points towards your score. Filling two lines simultaneously after placing one piece (called a "double") earns you 250 points. Filling three lines simultaneously after placing one piece (called a "triple") earns you 500 points. Filling four lines simultaneously after placing one piece (called a "landslide") earns you 1000 points. Keep in mind that a landslide is much harder to fill than a single.
Speed Bonus: As speed increases, so do the points added on to your score. Every time you fill a single, double, triple, or landslide, you also receive a speed bonus. The bonus is equal to 25 points for each speed level above 0, or 25 multiplied by the current speed. So, filling a single at speed level 8 gets you the normal 100 points, plus a bonus of 25 times 8. This totals to 300 points, just for filling a single! Note that no bonus is received for regular drops
