Windows NT Configuration |
We know you are eager to install your new software and begin exploring the Internet, but before you get started, please take a few minutes to read this short guide. It contains relevant information for a smooth installation and configuration of the software. You should have your TPG Internet Invoice or Voucher with you, which has your username & password, as well as other Setup Configuration details you will require.
A Guided Tour can be followed using Windows Help, under Connecting to the Internet (using Dial-up Networking)
Step 1: Setting Up A Modem In Windows NT
Open the Control Panel window using the Settings menu from the Start button. Click on the icon that reads Modems
- If a modem is not installed, the Install New Modem window will automatically be opened; Before continuing, be sure that your modem is connected and turned on
- Click Next so that Windows 95 can automatically detect your modem
- If a modem is detected, Click OK; If no modem is detected, contact your modem supplier
- Restart your computer by Clicking Start, Shut Down, and Restart
Step 2: Setting Up Dialup Networking (RAS)
- Open the My Computer icon in the top left corner of your desktop. Click on the Dialup Networking icon and this will prompt you to install the dialup Networking software. (You may need your NT CD for this) if you do have one installed, you will need to select if from the list provided.
- Click on Config and change it to Dial out and Receive calls. Click OK and then Yes to reboot the system.
- Go back into Dialup Networking and Click on Yes to Add Entry, call it TPG Internet, select calling the internet and then fill in the Phone Number. Click Next, and then Finish.
- Click More, then Edit Entry and Modem Properties, and then Server, in here only TCP/IP should be selected in the Network Protocols. And both the Enable Software Compression and Enable PP LCP Extensions should be selected.
- Now click on TCP/IP Settings, in here you should have Server Assigned IP Address selected, and Specify Name Server Address select both of the DNS Numbers that were provided with you receipt. Make sure that the Use IP Header Compression and the Use Default Gateway On Remote Network are both selected and then click OK.
- Now go across to script and select Pop up terminal window, then click on OK.
- Click on Security tab, and ensure that Accept any Authentication including clear text is selected.
Step 3: Connecting TPG Internet With The Windows NT Dialer
Click the Internet icon, check the phone number is correct, and Click Connect; After the modem has dialled and the usual tones complete, the Terminal Window should appear, if it stays blank for more than a few seconds press Enter; If this window does not appear, you should re-read the above steps
- When prompted enter your username and press Enter
- Enter your password and press Enter; Make sure that it is in lower case (as you will not be able to see the password)
- Once your details have been verified, you will be presented with a prompt containing the word choice; Type ppp and press Enter
- On switching to PPP, you will see gibberish in the terminal window; This is your cue to Click Done at the bottom of this window
- You are now online and ready to access the internet
- You can now use any Internet software compatible with your system whilst online
- You can use the Windows Help to find out how to automate the login process using a Dial-Up Networking script
