56K Macintosh OS/8 Configuration
We know you are eager to install your new software and begin exploring the Internet, but before you get started, please take a few minutes to read this short guide. It contains relevant information for a smooth installation and configuration of the software. You should have your TPG Internet Invoice or Voucher with you, which has your username & password, as well as other Setup Configuration details you will require. Sydney phone numbers have been used as an example please substitute with your nearest TPG location dial up number and area code.

Step 1: Setup Instructions

  1. Install the Macintosh modem scripts that came with your modem. If your modem did not come with any Macintosh software, contact the manufacturer and/or check their Web Site. (You should be able to connect at 28.8KBPS or 33.6KBPS using a generic modem script)
  2. Open the Open Transport (OT) PPP Control Panel. This is found by going to Apple Menu, then Control Panel entry, then PPP entry
  3. You have a choice between Registered User and Guest. Select Registered User radio button
  4. Then enter your Username in the Name field and your Password in the Password field. Be careful typing your Password as it will only show as a series of large dots
  5. Select Save Password checkbox (unless you want to retype your password every time you login)
  6. Enter the Dial Up Number for your location in the Number field
  7. Select PPP, then TCP/IP to open the TCP/IP Control Panel
  8. Select PPP from the Connect Via popup list
  9. Select Using PPP Server from the Configure popup list
  10. Enter 203.12.160.35 and 203.12.160.36 into the Name Server addr box
  11. Close the TCP/IP control panel, and open the Modem control panel by selecting PPP, then Modem
  12. Set the Connect Via popup list to Modem Port (or Printer Port or Internal Modem, depending on what type of modem you have and how it is plugged in)
  13. Select your modem from the Modem popup list. If your modem does not appear on the list, select a generic modem type
  14. Select the Sound radio button to On, and the Dialing button to Tone (unless your using a very old Telstra phone exchange). Do NOT select Ignore Dial Tone checkbox unless your modem manual tells you to
  15. Close the Modem Control Panel. Make sure you select Save in the dialogue box
  16. Select Options button from the bottom of the PPP Control Panel. This will open an Options dialogue box with 3 tabs labeled Redialing, Connection and Protocol
  17. Select Redialing tab
  18. Set Redial to OFF
  19. Select Connection tab
  20. This gives you several checkboxes to control the behavior of your PPP connection. These can be turned on or off to suit your preferences. These recommended options are as follows
  21. Connect automatically when starting TCP/IP applications, should be ON = Auto Login, OFF = Login Manually
  22. Use Verbose logging, = OFF
  23. Flash icon in menu bar while connected, = ON
  24. Prompt every 5 minutes to maintain connection, = OFF
  25. Disconnect if idle for 10 minutes, optional best set to 20 minutes
  26. Select the Protocol tab
  27. Allow error correction and Compression in modems, = ON
  28. Use TCP Header Compression, = ON
  29. Connect to a Command-line host, = OFF
  30. Click OK to close the Options dialogue box
  31. Make sure the modem is plugged in, and turned ON. Then click the Connect button to start your internet connection (or simply start your web browser if you selected Connect Automatically) to the TPG 56K Digital Modem Service
