PageStream can number your pages and chapters automatically. Pages are numbered consecutively from first to last, but you can change the starting page number to any number. Note that the range of allowed page numbers is 1 to 9999, regardless of the number of pages in a document or the starting page number.

Pages at the document level are numbered before pages in chapters. Pages in chapters are numbered before pages in their subchapters.

Page numbering for a document is controlled with the Document Setup dialog box. Choose Document Setup from the Layout menu to display this dialog box, or shift double click on the document or chapter in the Document Palette.

You can override a document's page numbering conventions with the Chapter Setup dialog box. Choose Chapter Setup from the Layout menu to display this dialog box or shift double click on the chapter in the Document Palette.

If you want standard, sequential page numbering, starting with page 1, you do not need to set any options in these dialog boxes.

To set the starting page number: Choose Manual from the Page Numbering pop-up menu. Enter the page number into its text box.

To set the default page number format: Choose a system from the Format pop-up menu. You can override this when inserting a page number.

Inserting a Page Number

You can enter the page number on pages by inserting automatic page number variables. If a page number variable is inserted on a master page, it will show the current page number when viewed on a normal page. If a page number variable is inserted on a normal page, it will change when moved to another page or when pages are reordered, or when the page number is changed.

You can also insert the page number of the previous or next text frames in the article. This is useful for creating jump lines. (Ex: Continued from page # and Continued on page #.) These are also updated automatically when pages are reordered.

To insert a page number variable: Choose Page # from the Type menu's Insert submenu to insert the current page number. Choose Previous Frame Page # or Next Frame Page # to insert the previous and next page numbers. Choose Page Count to insert a count of all pages at the current document or chapter level.

To have a page number centered or right justified on a masterpage, insert the page number inside a small text frame to define a constant edge to align to across pages.

If a page number is inserted on a master page, LM will be displayed on left master page sides in lieu of the actual page number, and CM and RM will be displayed on center and right master page sides.

Specifying the Page Number Format

Inserted page numbers default to the page number format set for the document or chapter. You can set a different number format for a specific page number variable by holding down Shift while choosing the menu command. This will open a dialog box to set the options.

Page Numbers in Chapters

PageStream offers complete control over page numbering in complex documents. You can:

Pagination Options

PageStream offers four page numbering systems:

These options can be selected from the Page Numbering pop-up menu in the Document Setup and Chapter Setup dialog boxes. Use Document Setup to set the page numbering for the entire document. Use Chapter Setup to set the page numbering options for a specific chapter.

Automatic page numbering: This pagination system is the simplest, because pages are numbered from first to last. Use this when you don't care on which side a new chapter starts.

Start on next even page: This pagination system starts each chapter on the next available even page. Use this when you want the first page in a chapter to be on the left side.

Start on next odd page: This pagination system starts each chapter on the next available odd page. Use this when you want the first page in a chapter to be on the right side.

Manual: This pagination system starts each chapter on a specified page. If you enter page number one for example, each chapter will start on page one unless you change the starting page for that chapter. Use this when you want each chapter to be numbered independently. (Ex: page 1.1, page 1.2)

Mixed: The pagination can be independantly set on each chapter. For example, if the first chapter is set to manual page numbering and document and all others at start at next odd page.

Chapter Length

PageStream offers two chapter length options:

These options can be selected from the Page Addition pop-up menu in the Document Setup and Chapter Setup dialog boxes. Use Document Setup to set the page numbering for the entire document. Use Chapter Setup to set thepage numbering options for a specific chapter.

The Blank Master Page pop-up menu allows you to specify which master page should be used for pages at the end of the document or chapter which do not have objects on them. This option can be used with manual page addition and with automatic addition when a blank page is left by the page numbering system. This option is often used in technical publications to create This page intentionally left blank messages.

Manual: This system is used when you need to leave blank pages in your document. If there are objects on five pages in a document or chapter, and you fix the length to 8 pages, three additional pages will be added to the end of the chapter. If there are objects on 10 pages and you fix the length at 8 pages, the pages will not be deleted, but they will not be printed.

This example shows a document with the length of the document and of each chapter fixed at 6 pages. You would normally specify this option independently for each chapter when you need to leave space for a known number of pages.

Chapter Numbering

PageStream offers two chapter numbering systems:

These options can be selected from the Chapter Numbering pop-up menu in the Document Setup and Chapter Setup dialog boxes. Use Document Setup to set the chapter numbering for the chapters. Use Chapter Setup to set the chapter numbering for a specific chapter's subchapters.

Automatic: This is the default chapter numbering system. Unlike automatic page numbering which sequentially numbers all the pages in a chapter and its subchapters, automatic chapter numbering sequentially numbers all the chapters at the document level. It then numbers all the subchapters in those chapters, and then numbers all the subsubchapters. It numbers one level of the document at a time.

This system is useful if you are publishing a book with sections or parts, and the chapters in the sections are numbered sequentially throughout the whole book.

Manual: This system allows you to specify a starting chapter number for chapters in the document or chapter. For example, if you wanted to always restart numbering inside each chapter, you could choose Manual and enter 1 as the starting number as shown in the example on the left.

This system is useful if you are publishing a book with sections, and the chapters in the sections are numbered independently.
