Pages are added automatically in PageStream as you create objects on them. You can display any page in a window, but it will not be part of the document until it or a page after it has an object on it unless you manually set the number of pages in the document using document setup.

You can have up to 9999 pages in a document or chapter. With the use of chapters, you can exceed the 9999 page limit.

Each page is based on a master page. This determines its size, orientation, guides and whether it is single or double-sided. Most documents will only have one master page, and are quite simple. The example on the left shows a document with ten pages based on master page A.

If you have more than one master page in a document, you can choose a master page on which to base each page. All pages will default to the master page created when you started the document, but you can change each page's master page. The example on the left shows a document with three master pages.

If you are creating a book, newsletter or magazine, you will most likely require double-sided pages. This example shows a document with a double-sided master page. Note that the first page of a double-sided document will be a right hand page.

You can mix single and double-sided master pages in the same document. This is useful if you need a master page for special pages that should be the same, regardless of the page side they fall on. You could use a double-sided master page and duplicate the master page objects and guides on each side, but using a single-sided master page allows you to avoid wasting memory.

Double-sided master pages actually have three sides; left, center and right; because page spreads can be made of more than two pages. (A spread is two or more pages joined together to bleed objects across the pages.) The center master page is used for pages in the middle of the spread.

Moving Between Pages

You can choose which page to display in the document window by clicking on the page buttons in the horizontal scrollbar. The Previous Page button displays the previous page in the document, and the Next Page button displays the next page. The current page number is always shown in the Go to Page button, along with the total number of pages in the document or chapter. When you first create the document, the total number of pages will be shown as a dash - to indicate that you have not placed any objects yet.

Click the Go to Page button to display the Go to Page dialog box. Enter the page number to display in the window, and if applicable, choose a chapter.

The button shows the current page number and the number of pages in the document or chapter. If the starting page number is greater than 1, the starting page number will also be shown. Ex: 23/61117.

Click the Previous Page button to display the page before the current page. Shift click it to display the first page in the document or chapter.

Click the Next Page button to display the page after the current page. Shift click it to display the last page in the document or chapter.

If a double-sided master page is in the window, the Previous and Next buttons can be used to move between its sides. If a spread is in the window, control clicking on these buttons will change which spread page is considered the current page.

To move to a page other than the previous or next pages: Click the Go to Page button. The Go to Page dialog box will appear. If you want to change chapters, select the chapter name; otherwise, select the document name if it is not selected. Enter the page number into the Page text box. Click OK. Leaving the page field blank will go to the first page in the document or chapter.

To move to a page using the Page Palette: choose Show Page Palette from the Window menu. The Page Palette will appear. Double click on the page to move to.

Page Arrangement

Inserting Pages

To insert pages with the Page palette: Choose Show Page Palette from the Window menu. The Page palette will appear. Drag the New Page icon between the pages where you want to insert a new page. A vertical bar will appear between (not on the side of) the icons of the existing pages when you have correctly positioned the New Page icon.

To insert pages with a dialog box: Choose Insert Page from the Layout menu, or from the Page palette menu. Select the master page to base the new pages on, and enter the number of pages to insert. You can choose to insert pages before or after an existing page. Click Insert.

Note that inserting pages into a document with double-sided pages can cause problems with your layout. Odd numbered pages will become even pages and thus will change from right to left master page sides. If you must insert an odd number of pages and the inside and outside margins are different, you will have to move your objects to compensate.

Deleting Pages

To delete pages with the Page palette: Choose Show Page Palette from the Window menu. The Page palette will appear. Select the icons of the pages to delete. Drag the icons of the pages to delete to the palette's Trash icon.

To delete pages with a dialog box: Choose Delete Page from the Layout menu or from the Page palette menu. Enter the range of pages to delete. Click Delete.

Moving Pages

To move pages with the Page palette: Choose Show Page Palette from the Window menu. The Page palette will appear. Select the icons of the pages to move. Drag the icons between the pages where you want to move them. A vertical bar will appear between (not on the side of) the icons of the other pages when you have correctly positioned the page icon.

To delete pages with a dialog box: Choose Move Page from the Layout menu or from the Page palette menu. Enter the range of pages to move and which page to move them before or after. Click Move.

Page Spreads

Spreads are pages joined together so that objects can be bled across the pages. Page spreads are often used for folding brochures, foldout sections, or magazine layouts in which pictures overlap two pages. There is no limit to the number of pages in a spread, other than the maximum page size can not be exceeded by the sum of the individual page sizes.

Spreads may be horizontal or vertical. Horizontal spreads are made of pages joined on their sides. Vertical spreads are made up of pages joined at the top and bottom.

You should not confuse page spreads with viewing double-sided pages as facing pages. The Facing Pages option of master pages displays double-sided pages side-by-side. Spreads and facing pages offer similar functionality, with the following exceptions:

1. Spreads may be made up of more than two pages.
2. Spreads must be manually created and dissolved.
3. Facing pages are automatically dissolved when Facing Pages is turned off for their master page.

If the master pages in the spread are double-sided, the leftmost page in the spread will be based on the left side of the master page. The rightmost page will be based on the right side of the master page and all the inside pages will be based on the center master page side. If double-sided master pages are used in a vertical spread, the top page will use the left master page side and the bottom will use the right.

You can mix single and double-sided pages in a spread, and pages of different sizes. PageStream will join them together as best possible.

To add a page to a page spread: Choose Show Page Palette from the Window menu. The Page palette will appear. Drag the New Page icon or an existing page icon onto the side of another page icon. When the page icon is correctly positioned, a vertical bar will appear on the side of (not between) the page icon to which you are adding. Continue adding pages as desired.

Note that you cannot add pages to the top or bottom of a page that is part of a horizontal spread, nor can you add pages to the left or right of a page that is part of a vertical spread.

To remove a page from a page spread: Choose Show Page Palette from the Window menu. The Page palette will appear. Drag a page icon in a spread to another position. When the page icon is correctly positioned between other icons, a vertical bar will appear between (not on the side of) the page icons. Continue removing pages as desired. When the last page is removed, the spread is dissolved.

While you can pull out a single page from a facing pages spread, the pages will be rejoined.

Selecting Pages Within a Spread

When you move to a spread, the page number of the first page in the spread is displayed on the Go to Page button. Even though multiple pages are displayed, PageStream considers the first page to be the active page.

The active page is the default page used by the Insert Page, Delete Page and Move Page commands. Its master page is also the default for the Edit Master Page command. The active page has no other special significance.

To activate a different page in a spread, hold down the Control key and Click the Next Page and Previous Page buttons to move within the spread. You can also double-click on the page's icon in the Page palette to activate it.
