James A. Sugar

James Sugar was born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland. After
his undergraduate and graduate studies at Wesleyan University and Pennsylvania, he worked as a full-time contract photographer at National Geographic from 1969 to 1992. Among his many awards are the NPPA Magazine Photographer of the Year in 1978, first place in Nature Photography in the 1986 World Press Photo Contest, and first place in Pictorial in the 1991 White House News Photographers' Association Contest. He has published his work in many books, including Railroads: the Great American Adventure, America's Sunset Coast, and Mysteries of Mankind. Sugar's photographs have appeared in National Geographic, Smithsonian Air and Space Magazine, National Geographic Traveler, Flying Magazine, and Popular Mechanics. In addition to corporate work, he has taught photographic workshops nationwide. He has exhibited in a one-man show at the Nikon Gallery in New York, and contributed to National Geographic's Odyssey. Sugar holds his commercial pilot's license, is a certified scuba diver, and is fluent in French. He is married to Janice Lee Zahler, and has one child, Sam.
