Joe McNally

Joe McNally was described by American Photo as "perhaps the most versatile photojournalist working today" and was listed as one of the 100 most important people in photography in 1993. Life magazine hired him in 1994 as its first staff photographer in more than twenty years. He started his career in 1976 as a copy boy at the New York Daily News. He shot photos for the New York Times, AP and UPI during the late 1970s, then for two years worked as the network still photographer for ABC television, covering news and sports. He began freelancing for magazines in 1981. He was a contributing editor for Life in 1984, and contract photographer for Sports Illustrated for six years. He has shot cover stories for National Geographic, Life, Time, Newsweek, Sports Illustrated, Fortune, and New York Magazine. His awards include a Page One award from the Newspaper Guild of New York in 1986 and two Pictures of the Year awards: first place in magazine illustration in 1988, and first place in magazine product illustration in 1993. He has taught at the Eddie Adams Workshop for eight years and has lectured on the NPPA Flying Short Course and the National Geographic Masters of Contemporary Photography Series. He has worked on numerous Day in the Life projects and was a featured exhibitor at the 1991 Festival of Photojournalism in Perpignan, France. McNally resides in Westchester, NY with his wife Michele and their daughters, Caitlin, 10, and Claire, 3.
