Laffont attended the prestigious School of Graphic Arts in Vevey, Switzerland prior to serving in the French army during the Algerian War. He is a founding member of the Gamma USA and Sygma photo agencies, and since 1973 has been a partner at Sygma. He is the recipient of awards from the New York Newspaper Guild and the Overseas Press Club of America, and has received the Madelein Dane Ross Award, the World Press General Picture Award and the Nikon World Understanding Award. His work appears regularly in the world's leading magazines.
