Thomas L. Kelly

NEPAL

Born and raised in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Thomas Kelly has been residing in Nepal since 1978; first as a peace corps volunteer, next as a program officer with an international non-governmental organization, CARE-Nepal. He has been photographing full-time for the last eleven years, and his images have been published in several magazines worldwide. Thomas has had five books published. Child in the Throne Room of the Gods (Kok Kampen, Holland 1985) reveals images of Kathmandu. The Hidden Himalayas (Abbeville Press, New York, 1987) documents the seasons and way of life in Humla, Nepal. Kathmandu: City on the Edge of the World (Abbeville Press, New York, 1989) examines the traditions of Kathmandu Valley. Thomas was picture editor and photographer for the book Mamatoto: Celebration of Birth (Viking Penquin, USA 1992). Tibet: Reflection From the Wheel of Life (Abbeville Press, New York, 1993) explores the cycle of life and death in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition. In mid-1995 he photographed, recorded and designed the internet packages Himalayan Yogi and Sex Slaves of India for Wired Magazine. Presently, he is researching and photographing the traffic of South Asian girls. He hopes to produce a provocative, moving and accurate anthology on this controversial and sensitive subject.
