Karen Kasmauski

Karen Kasmauski is a contract photographer for National Geographic magazine. Since 1984, she has produced 12 major stories for National Geographic, including a global look at the effects of radiation, an examination of the sociology of Japanese women, and coverage of Japan's economic role in Asia. Her coverage of viruses involved work in 14 countries and included AIDS, rabies, yellow fever, denge fever and influenza. Her April 1995 coverage of Ho Chi Minh city was the National Geographic cover story. She covered the Kobe earthquake for the July 1995 issue. Prior to joining National Geographic, Kasmauski spent five years as staff photographer with the Virginian-Pilot/Ledger Star in Norfolk, Virginia. Her extended essay on Down's syndrome won first place in the annual Pictures of the Year competition. Kasmauski photographed the book Hampton Roads, published by Howell Press.
