UNITED STATES

Paul F. Gero is a staff photographer for The Arizona Republic/Phoenix Gazette, where he has worked since 1990. Gero covered the 1988 political campaigns of George Bush, Michael Dukakis, Jesse Jackson and Paul Simon, and both parties' conventions that year. While in Washington, Gero witnessed the Iran-Contra hearings and the first Gorbachev summit. He has covered political unrest and the U.S. presence in Haiti and has spent a significant amount of time in Mexico, covering immigration issues, religious festivals, and the Tarahumara Indians in the Chihuahua Highlands. His favorite work was documenting the birth of his nephew, after a request from his sister, Mary. The story, photographed in black and white, was electronically scanned into a computer, imported into page-layout software, and presented as a small book.
