Melissa Farlow

Melissa Farlow is a contract photographer for National Geographic based in Pittsburgh. In addition to teaching photojournalism, she has worked at the Pittsburgh Press, the Courier-Journal and the Louisville Times. While in Louisville, her photographic staff won a Pulitzer Prize for coverage of desegregation of the public school system. Farlow was twice a finalist for the W. Eugene Smith Grant for Humanistic Photography. Among other honors, her portfolio was judged third in the National Press Photographers' Association Pictures of the Year, and she has been named Pennsylvania Photographer of the Year. Her work has appeared in several Day in the Life projects and other books devoted to photography. Farlow photographed for a joint book project in Ecuador, and most recently documented several families in Africa for Women in the Material World, a photographic book comparing women in different cultures.
