Introduction to PowerZip

Have you ever used the Internet or CompuServe? If so, you've probably encountered ZIP files. If you're a Windows User, PowerZip is THE way to handle these archived files.

PowerZip brings the convenience of Windows to the use of Zip files. To open an archive simply double click on an archive listed in the File Manager or Explorer or use the standard Open dialog box. The main PowerZip window features a list box with the names, sizes, and date/time stamps of all files in the open archive. A tool bar provides fast access to commonly used actions. No other programs are required to add or extract files from Zip files.

Most importantly, PowerZip is a Freeware. You can use and/or distribute it free of charge (see License Agreement for details).

About Zips

Archives are files that contain other files. Typically the files in an archive are compressed. Archives usually have file names ending with ZIP. Archives make it easy to group files and make transporting and copying these files faster.

Typical uses:

Most files available in "file areas" on bulletin boards and electronic services like CompuServe and the Internet are distributed as archives. Two benefits of using archives for electronic file distribution are that only one file transfer operation ("download") is required to obtain all related files, and file transfer time is minimized because the files in an archive are compressed.
It is often useful to send a group of related files to an associate. Rather than distributing individual files it is often easier to distribute the files as an archive to benefit from the file grouping and compression.
Some files are important but not used often. To save disk space simply compress these files into an archive when they are not used, and decompress them only when needed.

Archive formats:

Zip files are the most common archive format. PowerZip does not require external programs for basic archive operations. Currently Zip format is the only archive format supported by PowerZip.

Adding files to Zip Archive

To add files to an archive, open it and choose 'Add' command in the 'Actions' menu. Alternatively you can click button on the toolbar. Add Files dialog box will appear. Select the files you want to select and click 'Open'. You will be asked whether you want to store pathnames. If you answer 'Yes', path to the files you have added will be stored in the archive.

Deleting files from Zip Archive

To delete files from an archive, open it and, select the files you want to delete by clicking on them (to select multiple files hold-down the Ctrl key) and choose 'Delete' command in the 'Actions' menu. Alternatively you can press Del. You will be asked to confirm that you want to delete selected files. If you choose 'Yes', these files will be deleted from the archive.

Extracting files from Zip Archive

To extract files from an archive, open it and Choose 'Extract' command in the 'Actions' menu. Alternatively you can click button on the toolbar. Add Files dialog box will appear. Select the files you want to select and click 'Open'. You will be asked whether you want to store pathnames. If you answer 'Yes', path to the files you have added will be stored in the archive.
