Keyboard Input
Each window has an edit box that waits for some input from you . There are 4 types of
input you can do :
- A command starting with / . If the command matches a default alias ,
then the default alias will be fired . See Default Aliases . If the command matches an alias you created using the
editor , then the relative script will be fired . See Aliases and Scripts .
- A combination of Ctrl with a key . The corresponding accelerator will
be used . For example , using Ctrl+A in a channel causes the ACCESS dialog box to be shown
.
- A combination of Ctrl , Atl and a key . If you press a combination of
Ctrl+Alt+key , then the first alias that has this shortcut in its "shortcut"
entry will be fired .
- If the command does not start with / , then it will be passed to the window that you
entered it . This allows you to send text to a window . For example , if your window is
the channel #Chat , and you type text , this will be sent to the channel
The input window allows you to format text to force it to appear with some attributes
to the screen . These commands are shortcuts with the Ctrl key and one or more of the
following :
- B - This will toggle the bold attribute . For example pressing : Hello
<ctrl+b> there , will cause the work "there" to appear as bold . Using for
example : Hello <ctrl+b> there <ctrl+b> friend , will remove the bold from the
word "friend"
- I - This will toggle the italic attribute .
- U - This will toggle the underline attribute .
- K - This will enable you to use a color . After the K , you should give
a number between 0 and 15 to describe the color you want to use . For example : Hello
there my good <ctrl+k>3 friend , will show "friend" with red ( the value
of 3 == red ) . If you want also the word to have a background color , you can use this
form : Hello there my <ctrl+k>3,12 my friend . This shows "friend" with
red color in blue background .
The above commands are to be understood by other chat clients , like mIRC , PIRCH , or
Visual IRC . By contrast , the next commands are only understood by TurboIRC :
- S - This toggles the strikeout attribute .
- D - This character causes TurboIRC to beep
- G - This character has the same meaning with K , but now you can use 16
million colors instead of 16 .
- Y - This instruction causes TurboIRC to enlarge the font you are using
. Valid arguments are from 0 to 999 . For example : Hello <ctrl+y>300 there , will
show the word "there" enough bigger than the word "Hello"
- E - This instruction causes TurboIRC to pass a font to the server .
Using this feature enables you to override the font selection the remote client might have
. But watch out : for each Ctrl+E you do , 120 bytes are added to the message you are
passing , so some servers may not support large messages . Usually 1 or 2 font changes are
enough . If you only need to change the font size , use Ctrl+Y , not Ctrl+E .
- T - This causes TurboIRC to animate text . The parameters to Ctrl+T are
:
Ctrl+T effect,speed,range,timeout<text> . The effect can be 0 to 9 to indicate
possible effect . For example , 0 means scrolling text horizontally . 1 means blinking etc
. ( check each turboirc update for new effects ) The speed can be 1 to 9 , 1
means animation 1/8 of second , 2 means 1/4 , 3 means 1/2 , 4 means per second , etc . The
range is the range of the characters that the character set will be animated . For example
, if the string length of the text is 12 and you specify 1 as range , the text will be
animated within one character margin . If range is 0, TurboIRC ignores the Ctrl+T
instruction . Timeout is the number of seconds that should pass until the animation is
stopped . It can be up to 60 seconds , if it is larger , TurboIRC will kill the animation
in 60 seconds max . After the timeout , pass the text to be animated . The text cannot be
larger than 200 bytes .
When you clear the window with /clear , all animated text timers are killed .
You can have only one active animation in a window . If you start an
animation when TurboIRC animates some other text , the ^T instruction is ignored and the
text is displayed normally .
In addition , if you want to insert any other hexadecimal value in the message , you
can do it using $hxx , where xx is the value . For example , because Ctrl+B is the same as
the hex value 2 , you can do this : $h02 . Two digits are required for $h .
- Once you press the Control Key , a small window opens to show you all available control
codes . When you release the Control Key , the window closes
- You can use also the Control+O combination . This removes all previous formatting from
the text , freeing you from removing attributes yourself .
The TAB Completion
When you press the Tab key , TurboIRC attempts to find out what
you were about to write and complete it . After a tab key , TurboIRC searches your input
for a matching :
- Default Alias Name
- User Alias Name
- Your Nick
- Active Channel Title
- Nicks in your channel
- Server Name
- Last Channels
for example , if you are in a channel #mypp and you have entered
the # , pressing tab will result to the completion of "#mypp" . If you have
defined an alias /helpme , and your input is /he , /helpme will be the result . This is a
very helpful feature of completing for example nicks that are very big or something
difficult to decode .
Popup help Windows
TurboIRC will give you online help in some situations . When you press
the Control Key , a window is shown containing information about the available control
characters , and the mIRC - compatible 15 colors . The window is destroyed when you
release the Control Key
When you start typing a command and it matches with a , a window popups and shows you the
parameters and a short description of this alias . The window stays there until you press
enter , or change the alias name .
This feature can be disabled with Appearance Dialog .
You can use also the input menu to hide or show the toolbar . The toolbar state is
saved if you have enabled "Save Window Position" in Appearance Formatting .
