The RealAudio Server3.0 is an intelligent and versatile, if somewhat expensive, tool that sets RealAudio in a class of its own. It is capable of "intelligent bandwidth recognition" - in other words it will respond to a request for an audio file by sending a file that is encoded in the format suitable for the users bandwidth. Therefore Web content providers do not need to provide, for example, four links to different bandwidth versions of the same sound, one link will call the right bandwidth version for each user.
It can also synchronise HTTP events triggered by a tagged RealAudio file allowing, at its most basic, an audio driven slideshow.
The Server software is sold in incremental prices depending on the number of sumultaneous streams it is expected to deliver. A 100 stream license (100 users at the same time) costs $11,490 (less 25% for academic use). Delivering 100 simultaneous 28.800 streams, however, will use 200 kilobits/second, which is more than a "T1" can handle.
