I can't install the game.

Firstly the game and the demo are one and the same thing - in order to play the demo or the full game you must have installed the demo first.

Also, if you have installed Tower before, or attempted to install it and failed, you should manually remove any files that were copied to your hard drive during this process. If files are still present, you may be informed that Tower is already installed.

NB If you are using an old version of Windows 95 and get an error message at the end of the install procedure, you will need to download and run VBRUN60.exe from Microsoft. This file is available by clicking here.

Make sure first that your machine fits the required system specification.

Make sure you have enough space on your hard disk for the demo. You might need to make some more space by deleting old or unwanted files from your machine.

If you have a copy of the demo (distributed as tower_demo.exe), try double clicking on it to get it to install.

If you tried installing the demo and it still doesn't work, are you sure you have a machine with DirectX6 or later, and with a 3D accelerator.

If you get an error message 'Error Starting Program A required .DLL file, MFC42.DLL was not found' please right click this link. On Netscape browsers, choose 'Save link as' and save the file into your Windows, System directory.
On Internet Explorer, simply left click the link and save the file in your Windows, System directory.

I can't get the game to run.

Are you sure you have a version of DirectX on your machine? If not the link above will explain where to download the latest version from.

Are you sure you have a suitable 3D accelerator on your machine?

Do you have the latest drivers for your video card/3D accelerator? Check on the system specification page for cards the game has been tested on and which drivers were used. This page also details where to download the latest drivers from.

If you are trying to run the game in windowed mode, we recommend that you choose a resolution lower than your current Windows desktop setting.

The graphics appear corrupted.

Please check the system specification page for details of problems on specific cards.

If your card is listed as not having problems, check the video driver you are using is the one that was used in the test. Typically if the driver is newer than the one listed the game should also be fine. If you have an older driver, you might want to update your machine's video drivers - do this by going to the web pages of the maker of your video card.

There's no sound

Are you sure you have...

A suitable sound card (it must be DirectSound or SoundBlaster compatible)

You speakers/head-phones connected to your machine/sound card

You turned the volume up on your speakers/headphones

That your PC sound is turned up and is not muted

On the final point - within windows you can set the volume of sound. To do this

On the bottom right corner of the screen double-click on the yellow 'speaker' icon.
If you cannot see this icon see below.
This icon can sometimes appear with a red circle over the top of it - this happens when sound on your system has been muted (disabled).
Make sure each of the sliders are at their highest position.
Make sure that all of the 'Mute' and 'Mute All' tick boxes are off (without tick)
Make sure the balance sliders are all in the centre position

If the speaker icon is not visible:
From the Windows Start menu, choose Settings, Control Panel.
Double click the 'Multimedia' icon.
Adjust the volume in the playback box (under the Audio tab).
Check the 'show volume control on the taskbar' box to have the speaker appear on your taskbar.

Why can't I play the full version?

Well, have you bought the full version of the game from the shop?

If no, then please go to the shop and purchase a license code. For help on the shopping process go to the shopping help pages on http://www.fiendishentertainment.com.

If yes, you need to enter your license number to access the full game. Click below to enter your license number. If a dialog box appears click on 'open' then on 'Ok' to bring up the license dialog.

Click here to enter the license number to unlock Tower of the Ancients!

Note you can also enter your license code by going to the Tower of the Ancients menu from the Windows Start menu and selecting 'Set the game license'.

The game is slow/hard to control?

This is probably due to inaccurate game configuration and/or machine configuration.
You should try reconfiguring the in-game options to improve performance.
Please try some of the following suggestions, which should help you attain the optimum setup for your game and machine.

Make sure you close down everything on your machine except for the game. The other programs will eat up some of your machine's performance. It's an especially good idea to close down mail/internet programs as they can interrupt the game, making gameplay 'jumpy' (stops and starts)

If after trying the above you still find the game runs too slowly you might want to upgrade your machine. Here are some of the upgrades that will help to improve the performance of the game:

  • Increase your machine's memory - 32Mb of memory (RAM) should be more than adequate
  • Get a faster processor - a 233Mhz chip should be more than enough for the game
  • Buy a new video card. If you have one of the cards listed in the system specification page it should be fast enough

What do I do with a license code?

You need to enter your license code so that you can access the full version of the game. To enter the code you can use the link below. If a dialog appears that says 'opening 'license.fgk' with fgkey10.exe', click on the 'open' radio button and click 'Ok'.

Enter your Tower of the Ancients license code.

If you bought the game with a credit card you should use your name exactly as specified on the credit card. Your receipt will give you exactly the name and number you need to enter to get the game to work.

Alternatively you can enter the license number by going to the game's menu from the Start menu and selecting 'enter license code'.
