Hitman - Codename 47 : Playable Demo README file September, 2000 Version 1.0 This package contains a playable demo of Eidos' upcoming game "Hitman - Codename 47", due to be released christmas 2000. The demo has been tested on hardware in common use today, but since the game is currently at beta stage, we cannot guarantee that it will run on every system. If you experience problems, please read through part II of this document, PART I - Guide to playing the game ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Hitman is a game of planning, executing and escaping. You might be able to complete this demo mission only by brute force. It's highly unlikely though. And you will have a better time if you think before you shoot. To plan the Hit you have different tools. The laptop is one you'll use the most in this demo. The laptop gives you access to information about your target, to weapons and a map. To execute the hit you have lots of weapons to choose from. The weapons very much indicate the style of your hit: Stealthy and clean with the piano wire or rough and bloody with the shotgun. To infiltrate or escape there are different tactics. You can either make a dash for it or you can disguise yourself as somebody else and sneak your way through to the target or to your exit point. The rules ========= Through the laptop you will be assigned a mission. The map will point out where you start (green circle) and where you exit point (blue circle) is. Get in. Do the business and reach the exit point. Depending on how many unnecessary kills (civilians or wrong targets) you have committed and how much equipment you have bought, you end the mission with an amount of money. This money can be spent on the next mission. This demo is set in a very heavily guarded area. People are touchy if you mingle too much around the hotspots: - If you want to kill somebody without being attacked, hide your weapon quickly and get some distance between you and the corpse. You can always return when things have calmed down a bit. - The AI models adrenalin bursts. A slightly wounded guard sees very well and tends to get really aggressive. - Head shots are the way to go. - Spooked guards who have been alarmed by other guards or by bullet impacts or shouts tend to spot your weapon quicker than a lazy, yawning guard. - Be aware of how much noise you make. Sneaking is a way to keep the noise down. - Reloading your gun next to a guard is bad. - You can peek around corners and use them as hiding places when in a shootout.(not in demo) - While dragging bodies you can only walk or sneak. If you run you will automatically let go. - Hitman can steal the clothes from some of the characters in the game. This is very useful in order to get close to targets. The controls ============ The controls for Hitman - Codename 47 may be configured any way you like. In the default configuration you mainly use the numeric keypad and the mouse, like so: [num] [ / ] [ * ] [ - ] <-- binoculars switch cam mode --------------------^ ^------------ drop selected weapon/item look around left corner --> [ 7 ] [ 8 ] [ 9 ] [ ] run forward ------------------------^ ^---[ ]---- look around right corner [ + ] <-- sneak mode turn left ----------------> [ 4 ] [ 5 ] [ 6 ] [ ] walk forward -----------------------^ ^---[ ]---- turn right sidestep (strafe) left ---> [ 1 ] [ 2 ] [ 3 ] [ e ] walk backwards ---------------------^ ^---[ n ]---- sidestep (strafe) right [ t ] <-- action [ 0 ] [ , ] [ e ] [ r ] empty hands ---> [ins ] [home] [pgup] <-- previous item / zoom in ^^------------- reload weapon [end ] [del ] [pgdn] <-- next item / zoom out ^^------------- weapon fire mode (single/3/auto) [m] <-- map [esc] <-- option screen [f1] <-- laptop [f2] <-- mission status Mouse: [ left button ] <-- fire/use [ right button ] <-- context menu / drop body / exit binocular&sniper [ scroll wheel ] <-- next/prev item / zoom in/out The cameras =========== Hitman features two camera modes. You can switch between them at any time in the game, using the [ / ] key on the numeric keypad - A follow cam (default) that follows you. It looks good and is very calm. You use the mouse to aim and the keyboard to move and turn. It's really nice for walking around preparing, sneaking and observing the area. - A stick-cam that makes the control of Hitman very similar to a first-person-shooter. You aim and turn Hitman with the mouse and moves on the keyboard . It's very good for shooting and looking around. Sneak [ + ] ----------- Makes you walk low and without any sound. Walk [ 5 ] ---------- Is what you should use if you don't want to look too suspicious. Run [ 8 ] --------- Is mainly for hunting down your target, or for getting out of there. Strafing [ 1 ] [ 3 ] -------------------- Is really neat when in a gun fight, either when shooting or running away. Check around corners [ 7 ] [ 9 ] -------------------------------- Lets the camera float to the side - allowing you to look around corners. Shooting [ left mouse button ] ------------------------------ A shot in the legs will only slow down your opponents a bit. A shot to the head will slow them down a lot! Strangling ---------- The piano wire is a tool you must master. When you left-click to use it, Hitman will tighten the wire and hold it tightened until you release the button. You must be close to your target and point to the neck before releasing the. Action [ enter ] ---------------- Every object that can be manipulated can be accessed through the action system. Point at a door and the action icon will be displayed. The default action will be written in the upper left corner of the screen. It could e.g. be "open door". When pressing enter, Hitman will open the door. If you right-click on an object the action menu will appear as your cursor - giving you access to a range of actions that relate to the object. If more actions are available on an object - e.g. "Pickup Uzi”, "Take clothes", "Drag body" you can choose which to use by using the mousewheel or the page up and page down keys. Accept by left clicking or press enter. If actions are grayed-out you’re probably not standing close enough to the object. Actions are a good way to find small clues in the game. In the demo, try using the action on the limo. :) Dragging -------- The "drag body" action will be active on any body in the game. If you use this action Hitman will drag the body until you do something else than just walking or sneaking. Hitman will drop the body if: A/Hitman starts to run B/Hitman uses an item C/The player chooses nothing from the On Screen Display in the upper right corner The bodies react to real world physics, so if you want to ditch a corpse in a sour, you will have to drag the body over the sour and release it while it's dangling in free air. The map This demo is tiny (compared to the other levels), so you won't get lost, but the map might give you information about where your exit point is etc. (...) Now go on. Get used to the controls and the action system. Learn to use the piano wire. Learn to hide a body and to disguise and figure out how much money can be made from this mission could be done the cleanest – or how few if you feel like it… 3D Shutter glasses ================== The game experience may be significantly enhanced by using stereoscopic 3D LCD shutter glasses. If you own such hardware, make sure you use Direct3D, and that it has been properly set up (i.e. the demo software that came with your graphics card / shutter glasses is functioning) PART II - Technical Issues ++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Installation/Setup Memory and Performance Known hardware issues CD-ROM Problems Controller Problems Crashes and Lock-Ups AutoPlay Issues Contacting Technical Support Installation/Setup ================== · Preparing Your Hard Drive · Installing the game · Starting/Loading the game · Uninstalling the game Preparing Your Hard Drive ------------------------- To ensure that your installation is trouble free, you should check to see that your hard drive and file system are both tuned for optimum performance. Memory and Performance ====================== The game requires at least 64 Mb of RAM. Regardless of how much memory you have, you can maximize your available memory and increase the overall performance of the game engine by doing the following: - Closing any open windows - Shutting down all other programs, including menu-bar programs like ICQ - Defragmenting your hard drive Known Hardware Issues ===================== Hitman - Codename 47 has been tested on some common graphics cards. In spite of this, you may experience problems with your particular system. In this case, you may try the one of the following: - Try changing the 3D hardware API (OpenGL / Direct3D / Glide) to another one, which your graphics card supprts. - Try changing the screen resolution and/or color depth - Download and install the latest REFERENCE drivers for your card. There is a list of web adresses for this at the end of this file - Look at the list below for specific instructions on known problems NVidia Riva TNT, TNT2, GeForce, GeForce2 cards: Driver: Nvidia Detonator 3 OpenGL 16 bit: Some flicker around the mouths of characters seen from afar as well as license plates and the lids of some of the containers. OpenGL 32 bit: Everything O.K. D3D 16 bit: Everything O.K. D3D 32 bit: Everything O.K. 128 ATI Rage Fury Maxx: Driver: ATI Tech Enhanced 7-23-2000 OpenGL 16 bit: Some flicker around the mouths of characters seen from afar as well as license plates and the lids of some of the containers. OpenGL 32 bit: Runs exactly the same as in 16 bit colors. No difference in display could be observed. D3D 16 bit: Fog is not supported and incorrect colors are displayed on objects seen from afar. We suggest using OpenGl. D3D 32 bit: Same problems as with D3D in 16 bit color resolution. We suggest using OpenGL. Intel I740: Driver: Intel740 Win9x PV4.0 OpenGL 16 bit: Minor graphical errors. Some colors may appear incorrectly, like the blood of the enemies, the lids of the containers etc. OpenGL 24 bit: Not supported in the game. OpenGL 32 bit: Not supported by this card D3D 16 bit: This card only supports one texture unit. Hitman needs at least two to run. We suggest running in openGl in 16 bit color resolution. D3D 24 bit: Not supported in the game. D3D 32 bit: Not supported by this card Matrox G200: Driver: Matrox Millenium G200 AGP 2-21-2000 OpenGL 16 bit: A thin, white, flashing frame appears. Please use 3dfx instead. 3Dfx 16 bit: Everything is O.K. 3Dfx 32 bit: Everything is O.K. CD-ROM Problems =============== Hitman - Codename 47 requires at least a Quad-Speed CD-ROM drive with 32-bit Windows 95/98 drivers. I receive a "xxxxxx.xxx not found" error message when installing or running Hitman - Codename 47. This error message is usually the result of your computer using MS-DOS (16 bit) drivers instead of Windows 95 (32 bit) drivers for your CD-ROM drive. You can easily check to see if this is causing problems by opening the CONTROL PANEL (either click on the "My Computer" icon or click on the START button followed by "Settings," then "Control Panel"). In the Control Panel window, double-click on the "System" icon then click on the "Performance" tab. You should now see a summary of the performance status of your computer. One of the lines should say "File System: 32-bit" and the last line should say "Your system is configured for optimal performance." If you see a message saying "Drive X is using MS-DOS compatibility mode," then you will need to contact your system vendor to obtain and install 32-bit drivers for your CD-ROM drive. The Game AUTOPLAYS multiple times Some 24x CD ROM drives cause Hitman - Codename 47 to AutoPlay multiple times, which also may result in lack of control within the game. To remedy this problem click on the CD ROM properties in the System Properties panel and under settings turn off Auto Notification. Crashes and Lock-Ups ==================== When I start Hitman - Codename 47, my mouse cursor disappears and my computer locks-up. Chances are your installed audio card drivers are not compatible with DirectX. The only solution is to get a DirectX 7.0a-compatible driver from your audio card manufacturer. When I start Hitman - Codename 47, I receive the following error message: "The application Hitman - Codename 47.exe referenced memory at address xxxx:xxxx that can't be read from." Chances are your installed video card drivers are not compatible with DirectX. The only solution is to get a DirectX 7.0a-compatible driver from your video card manufacturer. The Installer keeps stopping when a certain percentage is complete, so I can't install Hitman - Codename 47. There are three likely causes: 1) You may have run out of free space on your hard drive. Please remove unwanted programs to free up additional space for the game, and then reinstall Hitman - Codename 47 2) Files are possibly being copied to a corrupted area of your hard drive. If this is so, you'll need to run the scandisk program and make sure to use the Thorough option (see previous). After Scandisk has finished running and has informed you that your drive is free of errors, try to re-install. 3) There may be dirt or fingerprints on the CD-ROM disc itself. Examine the bottom of the disc; if you see any fingerprints or dirt, carefully clean the disc using a clean, soft, lint-free cloth by wiping from the center of the disc (near the hole) towards the outer edge in a straight line. Hitman - Codename 47 is crashing to the desktop with no error messages. This problem can be caused by several different things. Here's a list of the most common culprits associated with these crashes: 1) Make sure the CD-ROM is clean (check for both scratches and smudges on the reading surface of the CD). 2) Make sure the game has been installed properly. 3) Make sure DirectX 7.0a has been installed properly. 4) Make sure you have the latest Windows 95/98 drivers for your video card and that they are DirectX 7.0a-compatible. 5) Make sure you have the latest Windows 95/98 drivers for your sound card and that they are DirectX 7.0a-compatible. 6) Make sure Virtual Memory is enabled on your system. 7) Run Scandisk. 8) Run Disk Defragmenter. 9) Clean out old temp (.TMP) files from the C:\WINDOWS\TEMP or C:\WIN95\TEMP directory on your hard drive (from Windows Explorer). 10) Make sure you do not have any Anti-Virus utilities (like Norton's AntiVirus) running resident prior to playing Hitman - Codename 47. 11) Make sure you do not have any 3rd party Windows 95/98 memory management utilities (like QuarterDeck's QEMM 8.0 for Windows 95) running resident prior to playing Hitman - Codename 47. 12) Make sure you do not have any 3rd party Windows 95/98 disk caching utilities running resident prior to playing Hitman - Codename 47. 13) Make sure you do not have Norton's Crash Protector running resident prior to playing Hitman - Codename 47 14) Try uninstalling and then reinstalling the game. 15) Try exiting the game, rebooting your machine, and re-entering the game. Note that if your system crashes to the desktop while playing Hitman - Codename 47, you should probably reboot your computer before starting a new play session. Otherwise, DirectDraw or DirectSound may be in a locked state, and the game will be unable to use your sound or video hardware. Controller Problems =================== Hitman - Codename 47 can take input from both mouse and from the keyboard. The functions of keys are defined in the manual. All mice to be used in the game must be connected before the game is started. Adding or removing a mouse or keyboard while the game is in play may well make the game crash. My Controller doesn't seem to work Make sure that the controller is represented in the Game Controllers option on the Control Panel. If the controller isn't listed add the controller using the add button. If the controller is listed as not connected then you may need to move the controller to the first position in the list or install a new set of drivers for the controller. The Game Continually scrolls through options. This is because your controller hasn't been calibrated or a controller was removed while the game was in play. To calibrate your controller go to Game Controllers option on the Control Panel and select the controllers properties. Hit the calibrate button and follow the instructions for your controller. The Default Controller Configuration has changed Adding or removing controllers may effect the order of saved controller configurations (they are saved along with the options file). To reset a controller configuration go to the controller screen and set the controller configuration to default. Then go to the Load Save options screen and save your game options. AutoPlay Issues =============== Why doesn't the AutoPlay feature come up when I insert the Hitman - Codename 47 CD into the CD-ROM drive? This is usually a configuration issue. There are many different ways to enable the AutoPlay functions of Windows 95/98. The standard method is described below: 1) Enter the Windows 95/98 CONTROL PANEL from the desktop by clicking on the START button, followed by SETTINGS, and then CONTROL PANEL. 2) Double-click the icon labeled SYSTEM, usually located alphabetically towards the bottom of the Control Panel window, to bring up the System Properties panel. 3) Click on the tab at the top labeled Device Manager and when the new panel appears, locate the section labeled CD-ROM and click the PLUS (+) sign in front of it. (If there is a minus sign in front, don't click it.) 4) Now double-click the CD-ROM drive revealed and the CD-ROM Properties panel will appear. 5) Click on the Settings tab at the top. 6) Towards the middle of the panel, you should see a few checkboxes within the Options section. At the bottom of that section, you should see a checkbox labeled Auto insert notification. 7) Make sure there is a check mark in the box provided and click on the OK button to complete the process.
