Configuring Network options

Use the Network tab to configure the protocols and proxy settings that you want Windows Media Player to use when receiving streaming media files.

To access the Network tab

The following options are listed on the Network tab:

Protocols

Specifies the protocols that you want Windows Media Player to use to receive a stream. Windows Media Player receives streams through UDP, TCP, and HTTP. It can also receive multicast streaming. By default, all protocols are selected, which means that Windows Media Player attempts to use each protocol to receive a stream before it gives up. Because Windows Media Player can receive files using a variety of protocols, it is recommended that you leave all protocols selected. However if you have a specific reason why you donÆt want to use certain protocols, such as you are behind a firewall and you know you cannot receive UDP or TCP streaming, then clear the appropriate check boxes.

Use ports

Specify a particular port, which is useful if your network or firewall administrator has established a specific port that enables streaming media to pass. Unless otherwise instructed, Windows Media streams attempt to pass through firewalls on port 1755.

Proxy settings

Specifies how each protocol operates with a proxy server. Do not worry about setting proxy values if you are not behind a firewall. If you are behind a firewall, and you do not know how to configure your settings, please consult your network administrator.

There are several ways you can configure a protocol to work with a proxy server:

Option Description
Autodetect proxy settings (recommended) Windows Media Player determines the ports that are open and uses them to receive streaming media.
Use browser proxy settings Windows Media Player uses the same configuration as your browser to access network communication.
Do not use a proxy server Windows Media Player does not attempt to communicate with a proxy server. Typically, this means that Windows Media Player does not receive streaming media from the Internet.
Use the following proxy server Windows Media Player uses the proxy server and port you specify. Select Bypass proxy server if you donÆt want Windows Media Player to connect to the proxy server when streams are from local servers.
