Tip A new but little-known feature in Word 97 lets you alter the width of any text set in a TrueType font by stretching or compressing it horizontally -- very useful in headlines. You can combine this effect with Word's new Outline or Shadow text formatting for even more impact. Here's how to manipulate text this way.  Add special effects to display text by stretching or compressing it Select the text you want to stretch or compress, then select Format--Font. Choose a font and size for the text, then click the Character Spacing tab in the Font dialogue box. Click the Scale drop-down list and choose a percentage by which to expand or compress the text horizontally (or type a percentage directly into the Scale box).
