I am in charge of production and programming for the Local Origination Municipal Cable Channel, HCTV, in Holtom City, Texas. My setup consists of 4 broadcast playback decks, all of which are fed, independently, into the 4 audio & video inputs on my automated A/V switcher. The audio is sent via RCA cable. The single audio output from the A/V switcher is then sent to the Passive TDS unit, while the video is sent directly to a Philips Fiber Optic A/V transmitter. From the TDS unit, the audio is also then sent to the Philips Fiber Optic A/V transmitter. This means that the audio from all of my playback decks is passing through the TDS unit before it is sent to the transmitter. This combined A/V Fiber Optic signal is then sent to the transmitter hub, where Charter Communications combines my signal with their other programming and then sends it out via Fiber Optic cable to subscribing customers.

Being a Local Origination Cablecast Station, one of the inherent problems is audio & video quality, because of our lack of sophisticated equipment compared to other, more well-funded networks. When I first activated the TDS unit and then listened to our feed coming back from Charter Communications, I noticed a distinct and very apparent improvement in the audio quality, which I later learned was also very obvious to our viewers. There seemed to be more depth, more layers of sound and a more natural quality that wasn’t there before. It was as if the true potential of the audio signal had been realized. While I was monitoring our broadcast I switched to the local ABC affiliate, which is right above us, and was amazed at how our signal was now as good or better than theirs. Before, our audio signal was noticeably inferior to the other channels. Our signal seemed muddy and flat. After I integrated the TDS unit, the signal opened up dramatically. It seemed much more spacious, more alive. When one is in A/V production, you are concerned with two things, the quality of your audio and the quality of your video. The TDS unit fulfilled and exceeded all expectations I could have concerning the quality of our audio transmission. The significance of the improvement in my stations audio signal due to the TDS unit has been a coup, considering its simplicity of use and the dramatic improvement it’s had on the audio portion of our telecast.
