The following groups of options can be used to configure FileQuest. The first five groups listed below are found by selecting the 'Options' menu item. This item is located beneath the Tools menu.
Confirm delete, copy and move operations - default on
When this item is checked, FileQuest will prompt before performing copy, move, and delete operations on a files. Checking this item helps to prevent accidental copy, move, and deletes.
Use bitmaps in menus - default on
Checking this option will add bitmaps to the FileQuest main menu.
Minimize FileQuest to the Tray Bar - default off
Checking this option will minimize FileQuest to the tray bar (the right most area of Windows task bar). In order to restore FileQuest, click the FileQuest icon in the tray area.
Maximum number of items in 'Recent files' - default 4, maximum value 9
Sets the number of previously open folders that FileQuest adds to the File menu.
Show splash window - default off
Will show FileQuest splash screen when it loads. The splash will be removed automatically.
Show Tip of the Day - default on
Shows the 'tip of the day ' dialog when FileQuest is started
Always open this folder - default C:\
Will open a default folder of your choice every time FileQuest starts
These options are relevant to administrators that want to set up FileQuest with multiple users.
Prompt for user profile at startup - default off
Checking this option will cause the 'Choose User' dialog to show at startup, a valid username and password must be given to start and use FileQuest.
Always use this user profile - default on, uses a default profile
Choose a default user profile when starting FileQuest.
Display only one folder at a time (Explorer Mode) - default on
Let you choose between two modes of FileQuest. When this box is checked, FileQuest will show only one folder at a time, the same way Windows Explorer does. When unchecked, FileQuest will open a new window for every folder you click / double click in the folder tree. This option can also be set by selecting 'Choose View Mode' item under the View menu. If this option is checked, the rest of the page is disabled.
Save desktop on exit - default on
Will reopen any windows that were open the last time you used FileQuest. Turning this option off will make FileQuest load faster.
Maximum number of open windows - default 15, maximum value 15
You can set the maximum number of windows FileQuest will open. If too many windows are open, and you try to open another window, FileQuest will change the content of the currently selected window, if possible.
The following options affect the background of FileQuest.
Standard - default on
Checking this option will color the background with the standard background color (usually light gray).
Solid Fill - default off
Lets you choose a solid color that serves as the background color
Gradient Fill - default off
Lets you choose colors from the combo box that will serve as the FileQuest background.
Use Wallpaper - default off
When this option is checked, you can select a bitmap for the FileQuest background.
Display combo box
If you have a wallpaper image selected for FileQuest, you can use this combo box to choose how you want to display the wallpaper. The options are tile, center, and stretch to fit.
Display the full path in title bar - default on
Display the full title of the selected folder (when maximized) in the title bar of the Folder windows.
Browse folders in same window - default on
When this option is on, every folder that you open from the current open folder changes the content of the current open folder.
Show only files - default off
When checked, only files will be shown in the folder windows.
Show hidden and system files - default off
Checking this option will cause hidden and system folders to be displayed in the folder windows.
Automatically select tree node - default off
This option can be useful when you work with a couple of windows at the same time. Keeps the folder tree in synch with the currently selected folder window.
These options affect the background color of open windows.
Differentiate between personal and regular folders - default off
Check this option in order to select unique background colors for personal folder and regular folders
These options affect how the folder windows will look and feel.
Single click to open an item - default off
When checked, single clicking an item will open it.
Underline icon titles - default off
When checked, FileQuest will underline items when the mouse cursor hovers above them.
Display grid in Details mode - default off
Checking this option causes FileQuest to display grid lines in the open folder windows. Only effects the details view mode.
Select the whole row in Details mode - default off
Checked this option causes FileQuest to select the whole row when an item in that row is selected. Only effects the details view mode.
Use flat scrollbars
When checked, FileQuest will use flat scroll bars in the folder windows.
These options effect the folder tree, usually found on the left side of FileQuest.
Single click to open an item - default on
Checking this item will cause FileQuest to open items in the tree with a single mouse click.
Display tabs at bottom - default off
When checked, will display the folders tabs ('Explorer', 'Personal', 'Bookmarks') at the bottom of the folders tree.
Show text in tabs - default on
Checking this item will cause descriptive text to be displayed on the folder tabs shown in the folder tree.
Use Large Icons - default off
Use large icons for the folders in the folders tree.
Show Personal tab - default on
Add the personal tab to the folder tree.
Show Bookmarks tab - default off
Add the bookmarks tab to the folder tree.
Position of Folders control - default left
You can set the folders trees default position on the left side or the right side of FileQuest. You can also set it to float (popup mode).
Context Menus
These options affect the context menus for folders and files. You can see a context menu, by selecting a file or group of files and right clicking with your mouse.
'Explore' should open Windows Explorer - default off
Select to cause the 'Explore' item from the context menu to open Windows Explorer, when unchecked the item will explore the folder from within FileQuest.
'Open' should open Windows Explorer - default off
Select to cause 'Open' item from the context menu to open Windows Explorer, when unchecked the item will open the folder from within FileQuest.
Use Windows Find Dialog - default off
Check this item if you would like to use the Windows find tool instead of the FileQuest find tool.
Add 'Open With' to context menus - default off
This option adds the 'Open With' item to FileQuest context menus. Use 'Open With' to choose an application to use when opening a file.
These options can have a great impact on how FileQuest behaves. Default settings should be fine for most users. Change these options if you are an advanced user.
When a file attribute changes - default off
Folder reloads when an item within the folder changes. Checking this item can result in frequent folder refreshes. You can always refresh a folder yourself by pressing F5.
When a file time changes - default off
Folder reloads when an item within the folder changes its time stamp. Checking this item can result in frequent refreshes. You can always refresh a folder yourself by pressing F5.
Set idle processing mode when minimized - default on
FileQuest goes to "sleep" when minimized. Check this option if you have a system that is under heavy stress.
Set idle processing mode when loosing focus - default off
FileQuest will go to "sleep" when you work with another application.
Release all allocated memory when minimized - default on
When checked, FileQuest will release all its allocated memory when it is minimized. Check this option if you have a system that is under heavy stress.
When Fast Find is enabled, FileQuest will keep a list of all folders on your local hard drives. When you launch FileQuest, it will scan your hard drives to build this list. FileQuest refreshes the list every 'xx' minutes if a folder was added or deleted.
Enable Fast Find - default off
When checked, FileQuest will use its FastFind feature.
Refresh folders list - default 15 minutes
Choose the amount of time to wait before refreshing the FileQuest FastFind list.
You can set custom fonts for the folders and for the tree. Select Fonts from the View menu item.
When working with multiple windows mode. You can set FileQuest to automatically organize the windows for you. The possible options are
The default is 'Tile Vertically'. These options can be set from the Windows menu, under Auto.

You can set any one of these options by selecting 'Quick Find Settings' from the Edit menu.
In order to add control panel applets to the main menu, open the Favorites manager (from the Favorites menu), and check 'Add control panel applets to Favorites menu'. Applets will be added to the menu, sorted alphabetically.
