When you play a CD, Windows Media Player gathers as much information about the CD as is available from databases on the Internet, including the name of the artist and track titles. If information about the CD is not available (you have a rare CD, for example), or your computer is not connected to the Internet, Windows Media Player displays the track number as the title.
You can manually add or edit the information about the CD track on your computer and to a database on the Internet. For more information about adding information about the CD track to your computer, see Related topics. To add information about a CD track or entire album to a database on the Internet, click the CD Audio feature. Click the Get Names button, and then follow the instructions on your screen. The information that you add to the database on the Internet may not be available immediately.
The Media Library uses the artist and genre information about the track to categorize the tracks. Otherwise, the tracks are categorized under unknown artist, unknown genre, or unknown album.
You can view information about your CD in either the Now Playing or CD Audio features. If the correct artist or track titles do not appear in Now Playing or CD Audio, you can use the Get Names button in the CD Audio feature to update the information if you are connected to the Internet. Newer CDs often contain information that makes it easier to locate the track titles and other information that you want on the Internet.
