Bugs and Fixes reader Steven Paglierani is more than just miffed at scanner maker Umax. While building himself a new cutting-edge system, Paglierani kept encountering file-corruption errors that prevented him from running ù or even installing ù Windows on his new system. After months of troubleshooting and replacing memory, hard disks and hard disk cables, he stumbled across a Microsoft knowledgebase article that explained everything: One of Umax's scanner drivers randomly corrupts the hard disk's file allocation table. The problem occurs only with 300MHz or faster Pentium II CPUs. Umax has posted a patch for the problem on its Web site www.umax.com.
