Chatting with friends online has become one of the most popular uses for the Internet. As more programs appear it can take a little trial and error to find the right one. To help select the package that best suits your needs we have included 12 free chat tools on this month's CD. ICQ has appeared in the Essentials section of PC World CD for two years now and remains one of the most popular downloads on the Internet (on one Web site, the number of times ICQ was has been downloaded more than 100 million times). If you are worried about people reading your messages, then SChatBuddy is a free tool for encrypting messages. Gamers will find Roger Wilco a nifty program for chatting while playing online games and Hermes will let you send messages across your LAN.

The most popular of the online pagers and chat tools that allows you to send real-time messages to other ICQ users. The program also includes chat and file transfer options.
- AOL Instant Messenger 4.1.210
Set up Buddy Lists and send private messages to AOL members or to anyone on the Net who is also using Instant Messenger. You can send rich text, hyperlinks, images, sounds or animation. It also features telephony support for live voice conversations.

Chat to your fingers' content with this full-featured chat client for Yahoo Chat and Ichat. CheetaChat offers WAV files support, a macro editor, the ability to save your chat sessions, an integrated Web browser, a customisable interface and integrated friends management.

Chat with your friends on the Web using this free instant messaging utility. You can create avatars, set up private rooms, host chats, transfer files and more.

An Instant Message program designed for LAN's. Small and fast, communicate with your friends and colleagues. You can ask questions to a single person or to a complete workgroup. While simple to use, you may need assistance from the Network Administrator in order to configure the program.

Feel like chatting tonight? Locate anyone on any channel currently on the Internet Relay Chat networks with IRCFerret.
- Microsoft Chat 2.5
Microsoft's version of Chat hasnÆt been updated in a while but it still includes many useful features including comic mode and customisation options.
- Net Meeting 3.01
Share applications and participate in real-time voice conferencing over the Internet. This program offers features such as file transfer, multipoint application sharing and whiteboarding. This version includes an optimised interface support for external videoconferencing systems, remote functionality and video performance of up to 30 frames per second.

This full-featured Internet communications utility lets you create, manage and host an online community. Chat with friends and participate in more than 10,000 online groups. Features include instant messaging, buddy lists, voice chat, Web tours, multiuser boards and games and AIM and Microsoft Messenger buddy list integration.

Roger Wilco is a free 'virtual walkie-talkie' that let's you talk to your friends as you play online games. It works with most games including Half-Life, Quake II, Diablo, Tribes, Unreal Tournament and StarCraft.

ChatBuddy is a freeware encryption tool that will secure your communications when you chat on IRC or ICQ.
