The check and evaluation commands for documents and projects let you do complete tests on your pages. To ensure that your documents are in working order, you can check the integrity of links with the command Check Online Links.
All of the links are checked: to image files and external script files (JavaScript, CSS, à), external hyperlinks (internal to your site, or external to Internet).
In the Syntax
menu, click on the option Check Online Links or click on the button Check Online Links in the Standard
toolbar.
When you execute a command by clicking directly on the option, the
option checked in the list (with arrows) is the one that will be executed (namely the
last one to have been executed). You have three options:
Check Online Links |
Displays the dialog box Link Validator, which lets you select the documents you want to check. |
Check Online Links in Document |
This command is only available if at least one document is open. The local address of the current document is automatically selected, and displayed in the dialog box Link Validator. You can also add files to be checked. |
Check Online Links in Project |
This command is only available if a project is active. Local addresses for project documents are automatically selected and displayed in the dialog box Link Validator. You can also add or remove files to be checked. |
To execute a specific command, click on it, using the arrows.
Add the URL files you want to check.
You can modify the check preferences at any time by clicking on Options.
Start
the check by clicking on Check.
The dialog box is extended downwards, to display the list of checked
files and results.
Add File(s) |
Click on this button to add files to be checked. The Add File(s) dialog box opens. |
Add URL |
Click on this button to add a Web address to be checked. The dialog box Web Address opens. Enter the address to be checked in the URL zone, and click on OK to start the check. |
Up and Down arrows |
Documents are checked in the same order in which they appear in the list in the Document zone. Use the up and down arrows to change the order. Select a document in the Document zone, then click on an arrow, depending on whether you want to move it up or down. |
Remove |
Click on this button to remove a document from the list. Select the document you want to remove from the list in the Document zone, then click on the button Remove to remove it from the list of documents to check. |
Summary |
This zone is informative. The data displayed provides information on the checks for all documents and URLs listed in the Document zone. |
Check |
Click on this button to start the check. The check results are displayed in the bottom section of the dialog box. |
Stop |
Click on this button to stop a check in progress. If a check is stopped, the button will be labeled Resume. Click on it to continue with the check. |
Report |
Click this button to obtain a report on the completed check. A new window will open, containing the check report. You can save the report as a .txt file and print it. |
Options |
Displays the dialog box Checking Options, which lets you change the parameters for checking links. |
When the check process starts, the dialog box Link Validator extends downwards, to display the results of each check done.
You can also access additional functions with the pop-up menu in the results zone.
A number of columns in the results zone offer information on the check:
URL |
The name of the item (image, script) or URL that was checked. |
Document |
The address of the document containing the item or URL checked. |
Line |
The line number where a broken link is located. |
Answer (ms) |
Response time, in milliseconds. |
Pass |
The number of connection attempts before the check can be completed. |
? |
Results displayed as icons. Four icons are used: indicates that the link is good. indicates that the link is broken. indicates that the link could not be checked. indicates that the link could not be found with the time delay specified in the Checking Preferences. |
Checked |
The date on which the check was done. |
Results List
The pop-up menu lets you manipulate the list of results. The following commands are available:
Open Link |
Displays the selected link in the browser window. You can also double-click on a line to display the document. |
Retest Links |
Do a new check on a selected link. |
Save Content |
Lets you save the results in a text file. The dialog box Save File opens. |
Copy to Clipboard |
Copies the address of a selected link to the Windows clipboard. |
You can change the parameters applied by AceHTML when checking links, among these the response time for an Internet connection.
To access the options:
Once the dialog box Link Validator is open, click on Options.
The Checking Preferences dialog box opens. You can change the following parameters:
Time to wait for response |
In this field, indicate what you feel is a reasonable time during which AceHTML should continue trying to obtain a response. The delay must be indicated in seconds. |
Number of passes on failure |
In this field, indicate the number of times AceHTML is authorized to attempt to connect. |
Delay between passes (ms) |
In this field, indicate the time that must elapse before AceHTML can make another attempt. The maximum number of attempts is indicated in the field Number of passes on failure. The delay must be indicated in milliseconds. |
Lazy threshold |
In this field, indicate the time that must elapse before AceHTML receives a connection confirmation. The delay must be indicated in milliseconds. |
Skip links checked last days |
This amount of time is used to limit the days between checks. If the document listed has been checked within this time (in days), AceHTML will not do the check. |
Maximum simultaneous checks |
In this field, indicate the number of checks that AceHTML can do simultaneously. The greater the number of checks, the slower the process may be. |
Mask |
You can remove a certain file type from the check. In the dropdown list, select the file types for which you do not want the links to be checked. |
Check relative links |
Relative links point to a specific location. Check this box to include them in the check. |
Move to next link on every trial |
Check this box to check the next identified link if the number of attempts specified in the field Number of passes on failure is reached. |
Attributes |
You can add HTML attributes, to extend the check to other types of items. Click on Add to open the dialog box Add an attribute, and enter the attribute to be added in the Attribute zone. Click on Edit to modify an attribute selected in the list. The dialog box Add an Attribute opens, enabling you to make the desired changes. Click on Remove to remove a selected attribute from the list. |
Restore |
Click on this button to revert to AceHTML's default checking preferences values. |
Close |
Click on this button to close the dialog box and save all changes. |
