How to use ToolBox - Administration Tasks
This section is for advanced users only. It describes some of the administration tasks that can be useful
in a handful of situations.
Installation
ToolBox comes packaged as a zip file, containing the executable toolbox.exe, toolbox.dll, some
*.icl files (Icon Libraries) and finally a collection of HTML help files (under ./help/). To install it follow
the steps below:
1. Create a folder (e.g. c:\apps\ToolBox).
2. Unzip TBOX2??.ZIP in this folder, keeping the file structure.
3. Run ToolBox by executing toolbox.exe
Should you want ToolBox to start when Windows start, use the procedure described in the Quick Guide
section.
Uninstallation
ToolBox will create a 'settings' directory under the installation directory, where it will keep its settings
and bitmap caches. It will not create any other file anywhere on your disk, except the Startup
shortcut in Start menu. Also, it will NOT write anything to Windows registry. So, uninstalling
ToolBox is pretty simple.
Just make sure that the shortcut is no longer in the Start/Programs/Startup menu, by running ToolBox, displaying
the Control Panel and unchecking the 'Start ToolBox when Windows start' checkbox. (You may verify the removal
of the link by looking at the Start menu).
After that is done, you can safely delete all the files and the folder containing ToolBox and its configuration.
Remember to close the application first though :-)
Copying ToolBox to another machine or directory
If you read the installation and uninstallation steps above, it should be now easy for you to understand how
you move ToolBox to another machine of directory. Simply make sure that you copy all the files from
ToolBox's installation directory. Make sure that you remove the Windows Startup link if you
don't need it, and when you finally copy the files to the destination machine or folder, run the application
and put it in Windows Startup if you like.
New Installation of Windows Operating System
When you install a new operating system, you don't have to re-install ToolBox. If you want to re-partition
or re-format your hard disk however, and you would like to keep ToolBox's configuration, just make sure
that you back up its installation folder first.
After the new operating system is installed, simply restore ToolBox's files and execute the application.
If the application doesn't find some icons, don't worry. It will attempt to find them again, next time you
run it. Also, by using the 'Repair/Rebuild Icons' menu option from a toolbox pop-up menu you will trigger the
rebuild of all the icons. If in the meantime you have installed some applications (in the correct locations),
ToolBox will pick up these changes and display the icons properly.
Migration from an older version (v1.*)
ToolBox offers this little tool for old users. Simply follow the Installation steps described
above as if you didn't have an old ToolBox instance. Make sure to put new ToolBox in a new folder though.
Now when you run ToolBox, go to Control Panel and choose 'File/Convert old ToolBox v1.* DAT file' from
the menu. The application will prompt you to select a DAT file. Simply browse to where this file is on your
disk (browse to old ToolBox's installation folder, into settings, and pick up a DAT file).
A new ToolBox with all your shortcuts will be created as soon as you click 'Open'.
