License Terms for Registered Copies of Stella 2000 -------------------------------------------------- The registered version (unless otherwise stated) is intended solely for installation on a single computer system by one registered individual. Distribution of the registered version of Stella 2000 is strictly prohibited. Registered users: please see your e-mailed License text for terms and conditions relating specifically to registered (licensed) copies of the product(s). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) INSTALLATION ------------ INSTALLING COELI - STELLA 2000 ------------------------------ Before you do anything else, place your mouse-pointer over the time readout in your System Tray and make sure your PC's clock is showing today's date. If not, you will need to double click and set it before attempting to install this Coeli product. Have you tried a previous version of Stella? -------------------------------------------- Don't worry! - Unlike most other astronomy programs in the marketplace, Stella always allows you to evaluate the newest version. There is no one-time shut-out in operation here. So please go ahead and install in the confidence that you will not be hindered in your assessment of this copy's enhanced capabilities. Windows automatic installation ------------------------------ Your Stella package is installed simply by double clicking on the file SETUP.EXE once you have unzipped the contents of Stella.zip to a folder of your choosing. We recommend the excellent WinZip utility for unpacking Stella's main .zip archive. You can get the latest version of Winzip from http://www.winzip.com If you have not already done so, we would additionally recommend that, prior to running SETUP.EXE, you use Explorer to create a new folder called Astronomy inside the Windows 95 Start Menu folder. Just navigate to Windows\Start Menu and click with the right mouse button on some unoccupied space in Explorer's right-hand window. You'll see a popup menu, one of whose options will be |New|. Select |Folder| from the submenu, and name it 'Astronomy' or some other appropriate title. After setup, you will be able to manually move the shortcut named Stella 2000 into this new folder for a tidier and more compact Start menu. Tip: when in doubt about the Win95 Explorer's file-listing, just press [F5] to refresh its display. Very often, an item you thought wasn't there will magically appear! THE SETUP UTILITY LEAVES ALL PREVIOUSLY INSTALLED FILES OF THE SAME NAME INTACT, SO WITHOUT FIRST REMOVING THE LAST INSTALLATION, A NEW COPY OF THE PACKAGE CANNOT BE INSTALLED. Uninstalling ------------ Stella may be uninstalled at any time simply by opening Control Panel from the Settings entry in your Start Menu, and double- clicking on the item Add/Remove Programs. You will be shown a list of programs currently installed on your system, from which you should select the item 'Stella 2000' for automatic removal. If you encounter a serious installation problem, please do not hesitate to get in touch. Keywords: ~~~~~~~~~ astronomy, Windows, Windows 95, planetarium, star chart, star map, ephemeris Category: ~~~~~~~~~ Educational / Science / Astronomy Recreational / Home & Hobby / Fun Program Name, Category, Keywords: --------------------------------- STELLA 2000 / Coeli - Stella 2000 // Educational/Science/Astronomy// Recreational/Home & Hobby // astronomy / planetarium / star chart / star map / ephemeris / observing log Short Description: ------------------ Interactive astronomy, a virtual observatory in which to explore realistic skies in real time, with observing log, list, ephemerides, location browser, and sophisticated searches embracing the solar system, DSOs, and over 15500 stars. Effects include scintillation, extinction, refraction, and precession in point-source, photoplate, and spotlight display modes, with the complete Messier catalog in ImageIcons featured as standard. Long Description: ----------------- Coeli Stella 2000 is a complete astronomy suite comprising a full-featured planetarium, an observing log and list builder, Coeli Time Line (also known as Stella BC), a live ephemeris, a location browser, and sophisticated searches embracing planets, comets, DSOs, and up to 300,000 stars - in addition to a 450,000 word Encyclopedia. Planetarium effects include scintillation, extinction, refraction, and precession in point source; photo plate and spotlight display styles; and the complete Messier catalog in image icons. An integrated HTML guide to the solar system, an astronomical dictionary, and the 2nd revised and enlarged edition of Aspects of Astronomy -- book-length tutorial covering topics such as "What are the Stars?", "Choosing a Telescope", "Cosmology", "Dark Matter", "Eclipses", and "The History of Astronomy", to name a few -- are included. See a screen shot by clicking . This updated version brings several new features. Drag Mode introduces complete plasticity into all your interactions with the planetarium display. Dragging the mouse auto-scrolls sky quadrants smoothly and quickly into view, as well as centering the projection in the process. A drag-sensitivity adjustment is available from the Setup window. In addition, Stella now provides direct links to extensive DSO and planetary information on the Web and these have been incorporated into Reports and Coeli Solar Guide. The new version also brings the convenience of toggling lines, names, and grids on/off all at once; makes the Setup window conveniently accessible from the sky's own context menu; adds Copy and Print functions to the Special Reference section; and enhances the Encyclopedia sections Aspects of Astronomy and Astrogloss A-Z with more hyperlinks and extensive correction of errata. ---------------------------------------------------------------- 6) Backups ------- To begin, we should like to make clear that as an exclusively Internet-based operation, we do not as a rule supply our software on CD or floppy disk. If your overriding desire to 'receive the product on CD-ROM or floppy' stems from an understandable wish to avoid the hassle (understatement!) of losing your copy of Stella every time your system crashes (??) or whenever you are forced to re-install Windows, by far the most painless method is to back up your Stella .zip archive immediately you have downloaded it. You can backup to any medium that is 'hard' and separated from your PC's hard disk: CD-R, CD-RW, Iomega Zip drive, tape drive, or even floppy disk. With CD-R etc all you have to do is copy the .zip archive across just as you would any other file. But if you haven't the facilities for this, your only other option is a 'spanned' archive to floppy using Winzip. For this you would need to proceed as follows: Stage 1 ------- 0) Make sure you have Winzip installed on your computer (www.winzip.com) 1) Create a new empty folder on your hard disk (your Desktop is as good a place as any) 2) Double click on your downloaded .zip archive to open it in Winzip 3) Click the Extract button on Winzip's toolbar and extract 'All files' to the folder you just created on your hard disk 4) Close Winzip. Stage 2 ------- 5) Prepare 3 blank formatted 1.4 Mb floppies; label them #1, #2, #3 and place #1 in your A: drive 6) Open your A: drive by double-clicking on it in the left-hand pane of Windows Explorer 5) Right-click in Explorer's right pane and choose "New|Winzip file" from the menu that appears. Double-click on this new .zip file to open it. Winzip should start and present you with a 'clean' window; 6) Click the Add button on Winzip's toolbar. In the dialog that appears, make sure "multiple disk spanning" has [Span: no format] selected. 7) Using the file window in the same dialog, navigate to the folder in which you stored Stella's extracted setup files; Select all the files you find there, or just make sure that *.* is the path shown in the filename box. Click Add. Change disks when prompted by Winzip to do so. 8) Close Winzip and delete the temporary folder in which you stored the extracted setup files. That's it. Seems a bit complicated at first glance, but actually it's easier than it looks. Obviously, CD-R/ZipDisk is the best option, because all you need to do then is copy the .zip archive straight over to your backup media. We should add that it's also worth reading Winzip's Help section dealing with multiple disk spanning. Hope that clarifies the disk backup procedure for you. The only reason we take the spanned option is because Stella's files no longer fit on a single 1.44 Mb floppy. Please don't hesitate to get in touch if you have further questions. And please, as soon as you receive your software do *back it up*! Best wishes, The Management, Coeli Inc http://www.coeli.com http://www.stella2000.com http://www.essentia.net http://www.skynow.com ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) Stella on CD-R -------------- How to obtain your registered copy of Stella 2000 on CD-R media --------------------------------------------------------------- As an exclusively Internet-based operation, we don't as a rule despatch any of our software by post. We can do so at extra charge, however. If you feel you must avail yourself of this special service, please proceed as follows: 1) Submit your Coeli product order online in the normal way; 2) Then submit the standard media/handling/postal surcharge by clicking here - https://secure.element5.com/register.html?productid=106551 (CD-R Surcharge $15) You will then be in a position to receive your registered copy's setup files on CD-R (NOT CD-ROM, please note!) or 3.5" floppy disk, whichever option you indicate as a preference on the form. Points to bear in mind: ----------------------- Before selecting the CD-R option, please make absolutely certain that your PC's CD-ROM drive is capable of handling the relatively new CD-R optical media. If ordering Stella 2000 Extended on floppy disk, please note that we cannot supply any of the 'extras' (Hipparcos catalog, VP, WDA, Astrogloss A-Z etc) on this medium, only the program setup files themselves. All extras will need to be downloaded from the Internet (unless you opt for CD-R, in which case every component of Stella Extended / Coeli Gold will be included on the CD). For further info on this option, don't hesitate to e-mail us at contact@coeli.com --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) Support ------- Coeli Inc. Support Remit ------------------------ Our product and after-sales support remit is simple. We are pledged to provide advice to the best of our ability and experience, via electronic mail alone, in the following single circumstance: * Difficulties encountered by a registered user in negotiating or understanding specific aspect(s) of program operation; Support is conditional upon said aspects not being adequately explained within manuals or other documentation. Additionally, it should be made clear that pre-sales advice will be freely available, provided the potential customers' queries do not fall under any of the following exception cases. Exceptions and Exclusions ------------------------- Items that fall outside this brief, and for which we can guarantee no advice or even - on occasion - acknowledgement include: (i) Adverse criticism of Coeli products or marketing strategies (though constructive feedback is welcomed); (ii) Lack of due courtesy in articulating an application for help; (iii) Program malfunction judged to be the result of system conflicts, clashes with third-party utilities etc; (iv) Program malfunction resulting from incompatible hardware or peripherals (printers, scanners, monitors etc); In the case of (ii) above, a user may even run the risk of joining our 'exclusions list' whereby - in extreme cases only - messages from the individual in question are automatically deleted at the mailserver. Cases like this have occurred and continue to occur, but thankfully rarely. Our valued customers for the most part show great responsibility, politeness, intelligence, and restraint, and we here take the opportunity to offer our gratitude to them for making Coeli Software the success it has become.
