Chapter 6 Contacting author

6.1 Sending source code patches

1. Do not ask if you can make some changes, make it and send me patches.
2. Make sure that you have latest available version first.
3. Use diff -u "distributed_src_dir" "hacked_src_dir" > mypaches
4. Do not send xdelta patches.
5. Compress patches with zip, bzip2 or gzip.
6. Write documentation about your patches, what it does and how it should work.
7. You must agree that your piece of code will be distributed under GPL.

6.2 Bug reporting

Try latest available version first. To make bug reports more usable write following informations:

1. Smart Cache version.
2. If it is a fatal crash (exception) send also your Java version and OS version.
3. Description of problem and way how to reproduce it.
4. If this problems appears with specific URL, send this URL.
5. If this is problem with redirects (SC will go when clicked on link to old page, but it should not), send me sequence of URLs which failed.
6. If this is problem with reload (shows old page) or redirects, send me default_refresh_pattern and pragma_no_cache setting. Also try if SHIFT + Reload in Netscape solves this problem.

6.3 User registration/feedback letters

I receive quite a large number of "thank you" style email. To make your letter more usable, try to include some of following informations. If you do you can consider yourself as registered user. This should make happy some people which was unhappy because they can not 'Register this nice program'.

1. Smart Cache version
2. Operation System / Java version
3. Where do you find this program
4. How long you are using it
5. What do you like/dislike
6. What to include in future version(s)
7. If running on network, how many people uses it
8. What you do for your spiritual progress
9. What is purpose/goal of your life (if any)
