1.0 Introduction

The VisualAge for Java IDE offers a version control interface for checking files in and out of an external software configuration management (SCM) system.

2.0 Supported SCM systems

The interface from VisualAge for Java to external version control systems uses Microsoft's Source Code Control (SCC) API. It supports the following SCM systems:

• ClearCase for Windows NT(R), Version 4.0, from Rational Software Corporation
• PVCS Version Manager, Version 6.0, from MERANT (formerly INTERSOLV)
• VisualAge TeamConnection(TM), Version 3.03, from IBM Corporation
• Visual SourceSafe(TM), Version 6.0, from Microsoft(R)

Other SCM systems that comply with the SCC interface should also work, but they have not been fully tested by IBM. These include, but are not limited to, the following products:

• CCC/Harvest by Computer Associates International, Inc
• Continuus CM by Continuus Software Corporation
• Perforce by Perforce Software
• PVCS Dimensions by MERANT
• StarTeam by Starbase Corporation

3.0 Rational ClearCase

When adding you are adding a project to version control, you must follow these steps to set the "Search for new project files" option:

1. Select the project you want to add to version control and from its pop-up menu select Tools > External Version Control > Add to Version Control.
2. Select Microsoft SCCI and click OK.
3. Select ClearCase and select the Show advanced options if available check box. Click OK.
4. Click the General tab. Select the Search for new project files check box.
5. Close the dialog to continue adding your project to version control.

For projects that are linked to a dynamic view, you must select to refresh them from the working directory:

1. Select the project you want to refresh and from its pop-up menu select Tools > External Version Control > Properties.
2. Click the Microsoft SCCI tab.
3. Select the Refresh project from working directory radio button. Click OK.

4.0 PVCS Version Manager version 6.6

If you use PVCS Dimensions 6.0 or PVCS Version Manager Development Interface versions 6.6.01 or 6.6.10, see the MERANT KnowledgeBase for current information on working with Visual Age for Java 3.5. Go to http://support.merant.com/ and click the KnowledgeBase link. On the next page, select the PVCS link. In the Search field enter "Visual Age for Java 3.5" and select Boolean search.

5.0 StarTeam Information

In order to use StarTeam with VisualAge for Java, you must have support for the SCC interface installed. Select the "Custom" option in the StarTeam client installation. Then select the "Developer Studio Integration" which installs the SCC compliant integration.

6.0 Corrections to the documentation

6.1 Broken links in the navigation panel

The following navigation panel link does not work in the Entry Professional Edition of VisualAge for Java:

• Team Development (this is a Concepts link)

This link is to team development environment information. It does not work because the team component is not included with the Entry Professional Edition of VisualAge for Java. No information contained in this file is applicable to development in the Entry Professional Edition of VisualAge for Java.
